Tatler Top 100 State Schools

Postby Wheresmyschool? » Fri Jan 03, 2014 10:50 am

From the Daily Mail

Tatler publishes its first ever guide to state education after soaring private school fees leave Britain's wealthiest families feeling the pinch

Education experts said the decision was evidence that the pain of soaring private school fees had reached even the wealthiest families
Parents are increasingly willing to pay a premium for a house near a good state school and top up their children’s education with private tuition

Mmmmmm. Be interesting to know what criteria they used. Fairly narrow minded I would imagine....!

This makes me feel a bit sick actually. So now that some people aren't earning quite such huge sums of money Tatler (!) is deeming that certain state schools may be alright. Having read through the first ones in the article no guesses for what type of children are at the schools mentioned (not a huge social mix that's for sure). I would guess that the schools mentioned are those which aim to get lots of children into top independent secondary schools. All we need is a load more Tatler readers moving to the area and making it even more difficult for local people to get into their local school.

Unfortunately I only see that demographic migration continuing unless the Govt put a serious capital gains or purchase tax on overseas buyers. Which of course no Govt would do because they're instrinically corrupt. Switzerland manages to do it without problem so it can be done in order to protect their citizens from speculators.

The areas of Kensingston, Chelsea, Knightsbridge which have been the area of London Tatler readers (huge generalisation I know) have simply been priced out by Arabs, Russian and now Chinese buyers who are looking to place assets abroad. Together with funds like the Norweigan Sovereign Fund, that West London price surge has had it's consequences in our own BTC boom.

Longer term it's not going to get any better unless there are more 'brownfield'/industrial site developments like the Battersea Power Station which should bring a lot of properties on the market. Hang on your house because it will surely be over the rate inflation increases for the next 5 years. Horrible for locals wanting to get on the housing ladder but nothing will get done about it for sure, whoever you vote for.

I can't find anything which says how the list was compiled. It appears to be based on people's prejudice and further demonstrates the problem the state sector has in ever proving that it is at least as good as the private sector, if not better. The problem this creates is that those who are moving children from the private sector will be taking up places and creating an even bigger shortage than there is now.

When private schools become bankrupt, presumably they will then apply to become "free" schools, so the state may then fund some of the worst of the ex-private sector (it already is doing so). How much more sensible to stop this stupid competition between schools (except on the playing fields) and allow local authorities to plan on the basis of need for places.

Something should also be put in place to prevent those with money from renting property in the catchment areas of schools perceived to be successful in order to get a place, before moving back to their proper home. This is depriving genuine local people from accessing their local school.

The argument that "of course, you do the best for your own child" may sound reasonable but when put with "whilst trampling on other children" doesn't sound quite so good.

Honeywell named best primary state school in London.
I can see the positives - more gentrification for the local area...

I'm not sure why gentrification is a good idea. I prefer living in a mixed community.

Lets celebrate that by whatever measures used that one of our local state schools is deemed one of the best primary schools in the UK. Its good news whichever way you look at it.

Having read the article, I don't think Tatler's criteria is worth much. I'd place much more stock in local opinion and Ofsted. It's just part of the marketing hype that goes along with selling magazines.

A few years ago Holy Ghost was rated no. 1 and I remember moans and groans of people not being able to get there children in a school with a catchment are smaller than a postage stamp.

I would be careful with that list. It is unreliable. Where did they get the facts from? Honeywell at top of the list? I don't think so.
