Anyone else feels bad?

Postby syrianchildren » Mon Oct 10, 2016 10:49 am

Dear all,

I think every day about how little I seem to be doing to help Syrian refugees, specially children.

Does anyone else feels the same and would like to start a group to see if there is something we can do?

I know I may be naive thinking I can help but needed to try.

Let me know if you feel the same and lets have coffee somewhere to talk about it.

Thank you x

Yes, definitely. I feel the problem is that they are so far away. Yes, there is Calais, but the large majority of Syrian children in need are not in Calais. I think about mothers with babies and toddlers and how on earth they survive walking from town to town, no nappies, few spare clothes, little food or water. It's a wonder, really. And I am here with lots of spare baby clothes etc. I think trying to help from within the UK is difficult - one has to go to Europe where they are - because this government (and a lot of the anti-immigrants in the general public that seem to be revelling in the post-Brexit UK) will never let these Syrian children and families be helped in the UK. Anyway, happy to help with any initiative that's being set up.

I've got heaps of baby/toddler gear I would love to donate to the Syrians. My kids are 4 and 7 now and I've been hanging onto it in the hope that I could do this sort of thing! I offered them to the organisation organising help for the refugees on Kos but they were inundated with baby/kid stuff at the time and wanted sleeping bags, bras, adult socks and shoes etc I would simply love my stuff to go to Syrian children in need, including Calais (especially as it gets colder). I've got 2 duvets, 2 children's sleeping bags to donate. How do you get stuff into Aleppo I wonder if it's possible?

Yes, I'm interested. Likewise have clothes but don't even know where to donate them so that they reliably reach a destination and don't know what else to do - keep meaning to look it up! Not sure what we can do but it would be good to find out one way or the other.

Hi i would like to be involved and have the same thoughts about not being able to do anything about it. Very frustrating and painful to watch people and children suffer and die.

Would be happy to meet up soon and see what how we can help.

Just a quick thought, as off on school run, but you might like to look into Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees and the charity Home for Good.

Hi there,
Samara's Aid Appeal could be what you are looking for. It was set up by a Mum down in Worthing two years ago and in that time she has sent over approx 52 lorry loads of clothing, shoes, blankets etc, set up 4 emergency hospitals and sent over 11 fully equipped ambulances.
A friend of mine in Wimbledon was keen to help out the Syrians also and so has become the Samara's Aid Appeal organiser for Wimbledon area. 2 weeks ago we packed 130 banana boxes full of winter clothing and shoes to be sent over, and they went in an articulated lorry last week and will arrive in Syria in a couple of weeks time.
It is a fantastic charity, just contact them and you can set up your own hub here in nappy valley. In fact there is a list on the website of all the different hubs around the country and the contact details of the people who organise them including my friend Josephine who runs the Wimbledon one.
Here is the website:

Hello,
I'm glad someone else has posted about this, because sometimes I feel like it's just me banging on about it.
I too feel this guilt where I am living a lovely life and sometimes whinge about first world problems, when there are people on the verge of death, especially children. This time last year I had a similar discussion with one of my friends and we thought well let's do something, anything!
So, since I have been involved with a UK based charity called Syria Relief who provide basic needs as well as medical aid to the victims of this war inside Syria.
So last November we organised a dinner with friends and work colleagues and managed to negotiate reduced rates at a restaurant and charged everyone £75 a ticket. We stumbled upon this amazing lady called Anna Farina who at the time was working in banking(and now works for Syria Relief), and she felt like we do about the conflict so was travelling to Turkey to send clothes and supplies etc and also set up a school for Orphans in Syria. She spoke at the dinner and put us in touch with other people involved with Syria Relief who also spoke. It was a massive succcess and we raised about £18k for the school. Anyway I'm telling you this story because we just decided to ask friends and family and colleagues to come and yes it took a lot of organisation but we helped, we really helped!
We since have done smaller things like a charity run, and charity football match to raise money for a mobile dental unit that Syria Relief set up.( I'm a dentist- so tried to get as many colleagues to donate)
My husband is also involved with raising money for prosthetic limb clinics. He has launched "The Million Kicks Challenge" which is a bit like the ice bucket challenge if you remember it. You film yourself trying to do as many keepy uppys as possible and post it to social media. The hope is that it goes viral and people will donate to Syria Relief. His website is fcunity.com if you want to take a look and get involved. And if you know any corporates who want to use their CSR budgets to fund it!

The last thing I want to mention is Wandsworth council have agreed to accept one refugee family in the borough, we can surely accept more and there's someone called Tom who is leading the campaign to accept more. You can email him on: wandsworthwelcomesrefugees@gmail.com If you want to learn more or help. All I did was sign a petition- I'm sure there is more we can do!

I really feel strongly about the war and the crisis. The politics is all so complicated, but for me I don't care who is right and who is wrong, I just feel there is a humanitarian crisis here, and I cannot stand by and watch without helping.
Anyway sorry for such a long post but I hope someone feels inspired to organising their own event or kick a ball in order to help.
