Thanks so much for all the comments and support everyone, it's heartening.

Addled, it may not be an epidemic in your area but in mine, I can often walk 50 yards and see 10 instances, so in my neighbourhood it really is. Other parents have described the school run as an obstacle course or slalom, because there's so much of it.

I'll post the petition shortly but thanks for the suggestion, I think a FB page or group might help facilitate the sharing of evidence, to help identify people and assist the council in taking action against them. NJTA would you mind forwarding me that email if you're a subscriber? I'm not familiar with it, TIA.

Thanks Janee and Moomoo, I will alert the council chap to this thread and your comments, do you mind sharing where this 'open space' is?

The council have said they'll look at providing a better interface for people to submit photos and videos, because I think the community being self-policing is key to this. In the mean time, two officers came to my flat yesterday to download a video onto a memory stick and follow up, so I'd urge any of you with door cams to set them to motion and help catch these selfish people.

In case I didn't already post them, here are the details you need to report people 020 8871 7606, or by e mail at: dogcontrol@wandsworth.gov.uk

The open space near me is the Petergate Open Space, near the Wandsworth Bridge roundabout.

I was just in the local paper talking about this issue last week- it’s particularly bad in the Shaftesbury area.

Personally I think more bins would be a step in the right direction as it’s often bags of poo that are left strewn around or piled up at the base of trees.

The council wrote to me to say no one had complained recently so I’d urge everyone to write to them and complain, demand bins be reinstated and pressure them to stop cutting funds to these services.

I agree about pestering the council but don't forget the general rubbish bins as well. There is no reason why, if they are putting in dog mess bins, they can't put the double bins in - there is a shortage of those as well.

There is quite a bit of fox poo and cat poo everywhere in the mornings. It is unfortunately not limited to dog owners. How can we address all the foxes and cats disturbing bins, making a mess and then leaving a nice poo! Believe it or not if you have owned animals you will be able to tell the difference between, fox, cat and dog poo :-) Foxes running free and cats running free to poo wherever they like are slightly more of a problem than a couple idiot dog owners. Let's not blame the dogs only for this (I suppose that's my main point).

If it is a large lump of pooh (but not as big as horse mess!) - it is definitely dog. Fox pooh tends to be rather small and narrow as does cat pooh. Cats will also try to bury their mess.

Thank you kindly NJTA, the school thing is a great idea that's been mentioned a number of times on different forums, so I'm going to try and make that happen in my school, Allfarthing primary. I think it's might be a good idea, as you say, to set up a just giving page so that local businesses or individuals can donate something towards the prizes. We'll then try and get coverage in all the local magazines etc.

I have recently set up a fb group to allow people to post video and pictures of anyone allowing their dog to foul the streets. Please join it and share the link to the group with your friends, neighbours and anyone as incensed at this public nuisance as many of us on here are. Good news too! The video that was supplied of fouling on Mallinson road, lead someone else to come forward and identify the man responsible. The person supplying the footage has kindly agreed to provide the sworn statement necessary for a prosecution to be brought, so the man will be getting a visit this week. Brilliant! It really is worth reporting every instance of this that you witness and together we really can do something about it.

I reckon it's a hardcore of a couple of hundred people across the borough who never pick up, and if we can get half of them to change their ways, imagine the difference. I've made it a closed group to begin with but will make it open soon to allow sharing and tagging. Thanks everyone :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/2004028933251086/

On the fox/cat thing, yes I get cat poo in my back garden but not much you can do about that. I'm also right next to the common so get a fair bit of fox poo in our front garden but it's nothing to the blight of dog mess, 95+ of stuff on the streets is definitely dog, so that needs to be the focus IMO

epidemic
ɛpɪˈdɛmɪk/Submit
noun
1.
a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time.
"a flu epidemic"
synonyms: outbreak, plague, scourge, infestation; More
adjective
1.
of the nature of an epidemic.
"shoplifting has reached epidemic proportions"
synonyms: rife, rampant, widespread, wide-ranging, extensive, sweeping, penetrating, pervading; More

I would say that this is very much an epidemic problem and anyone who disagrees must be walking around blindly (careful what you step in!). From Nightingale Lane to Belleville school - 17 mounds of dog excrement one morning.

Please everyone download the Wandsworth App - Report it. Super fast and efficient - even if rushing to school!

Update

The same chap has now been caught on video TWICE on Mallinson Road, so we believe that because he's clearly a repeat offender, they are going to go straight to prosecution on this.

I hope the local paper might report on it and cause him such embarrassment that he'll change his ways for evermore and perhaps the publicity might lead a few other regular culprits to think twice before letting their dog foul.

We've had a bit of a respite recently with the snow helpfully cleansing the streets quite effectively but I'm sure it'll return to the hideous former levels before too long, so it's really important people do challenge the behaviour, get evidence and submit it because the council are prepared to act and do have teeth! Maximum fine is £500

There are quite a few in the FB group now so please do join, you can use it to highlight problem areas so the councils wardens can do more patrols there to both discourage it and catch people.

Guy, you have my full support too. Thank you so much for pursuing this. I've lost count of the number of times we've had to dodge the poo whilst walking to and fro from school. I just wish dog owners would be more considerate and think of others when their beloved pooch is defacating on the pavement. I do believe that most dog owners pick up, but anyone that is a serial offender should definitely face a severe warning. There is absolutely no excuse.
If I witness it happening and the owner walks away, then I will not hesitate to approach him/her with a nappy bag and see what happens.

There is a £1000 fine on Peckham Rye - lots of large clear signs - and there is far less mess
(There are also more bins)

That turd looks human. Not LIKE a human, although it does somewhat resemble Donald Trump, but a human turd.

Can you post a picture of this sign please Stinkymummy?

I'm trying to do some research into how the policies and enforcement differ between the three neighbouring boroughs of Lambeth, Wandsworth and Merton.

Having £1,000 as the upper limit for a court prosecution is obviously much better than £500 and I'd quite like to know on what basis Wandsworth chose the lower figure.

Great news today though, the local paper got in touch and are looking at doing a feature around the forthcoming prosecution and the problem in the borough generally.

Does anyone else think it's a bit mental that Wandsworth Council employ four dog wardens full-time, yet they work office hours, when it's clear most of the problem happens between dusk and midnight. I think they need to change the job remit and have these folk on the streets in those hours 6-12pm.

Amazingly too, it transpires some (if not all) of the team have NOT been trained to take a statement from the public in the context of supplying video evidence to the council to bring a prosecution. You'd think that would be a key part of the job wouldn't you?

It's clear there's a great deal more Wandsworth Council could do. Tis initiative from Keep Britain tidy seems to have had some good results, I'd welcome a trial of it here...
