3G Sports Pitches at La Retraite School - extending hours of operation

Postby Goldhawk » Tue May 01, 2018 9:52 am

La Retraite Catholic Girls school have applied to extend the hours of operation of it's 3G sports pitch

This is a great facility that is currently used by various community sport and commercial sport groups such as Spencer Hockey and Chelsea Soccer Schools

Extending the hours will allow more groups to use the facilities

If you wish to support their planning application the reference is 18/01502/VOC

Thanks for alerting me to this, Goldhawk. I suspect you are not a direct neighbour of the school or you would be unlikely to be supporting.

Since La Retraite ramped up its commercial activity a couple of years ago, living around the school has become hellish due to hugely increased traffic and the pollution from idling cars, not to mention noise until late from slamming car doors and disturbance from the activities themselves. It’s tough enough not being able to get your small children to sleep until after 8pm (the current event curfew) when they have school the next day, let alone the proposed 10pm. Imagine the stressful impact on family life.

I know schools need to raise extra revenue these days but guidelines state this should be done with consideration for neighbouring residents. La Retraite needs to bear this in mind and reconsider their proposals.

You would not be saying this if you lived nearby. Extending the hours of operation of this facility will be horrendous for the school's neighbours. The light pollution from the floodlighting and the noise from the users of the facility is already profoundly disruptive to the families that live nearby. The 8pm finish that is already in place is too late in my view - we have to keep windows closed as the noise keeps my kids awake. Extending it to 10pm on weeknights and increasing the hours of use on weekends will be unbearable. Please have some consideration, La Retraite, and a smidge of respect for your neighbours.

This facility comes at a cost to the residents backing onto the field with light and sound trespass into rear of our homes from the floodlights and inevitable football language and noise of the adult players, with the crashing of balls into the support netting like dropping tea trays in a church service. We are reluctant to babysit our grandchildren in face of this - and additional hours will make it impossible for us and the several young families with babies and toddlers. Grandparents.

I am also a neighbour and am shocked at the application to extend the hours of play on the school grounds to 10pm. I have two young children and the incessant noise from the footballs crashing against the back fence have made us want to rarely go into our own garden. The shouting and foul language from the adult players of an evening is terrible.

It is dishonest of them to claim they are helping the community when all these extra classes on evenings and weekends are purely for monetary gain.

I live nearby too and the light and noise pollution is appalling. Should never have been sited so close to residential area. The grounds are huge and a big error was made in siting the pitches with floodlights directly adjacent to private homes. It’s already unacceptable and any further extension is unthinkable. As someone already said the noise of grown men swearing is not one of community improvements!

I appreciate that those of you who back onto the facility will likely object - I assume the original sports field and school were there when you moved in

Never assume anything Goldhawk, when we moved here there was a lovely green natural playing field for the school children to use- not the horrendous blue swimming pool colour it is today with monstrous floodlights. The school is driven by greed wanting to extend to unsociable hours. When planning permission went ahead it was on the strict conditions that the operating hours were only from 8am-8pm Monday -Friday and 10am -4pm on weekend and public holidays. Later operating times would not give sufficient respite to residents. Lambeth planning policy states that all residence should be able to live in the “quiet enjoyment of their homes.” They will be going against their policy if they go ahead with the extended hours. The nearest residence is only 12metres from the pitch. Extending these hours purely for financial gain is abhorrent. There are 151 football pitches within a 5 mile radius of Balham - https://www.mylocalpitch.com/london/res ... all/balham . Local residence should be looking at these pitches for their late night sporting hobbies.

It is a voluntary aided state school - who do you think is gaining financially from this??

I have just read through the supporters' and objectors' comments and looked at all the documentation on Lambeth's website and it seems that overlooked in all this commentary is that surveys have been done by the school to mitigate noise and any light intrusion, so the school is aware of the local residents' concerns and is trying to address them.
With funding of the public sector being cut drastically since 2010, I applaud the school for being creative enough in looking at gaining additional funds and protecting the educational offer for their students as well as providing sporting facilities to the local community. I just wish my children's school was as forward thinking, as they are making more teachers redundant this summer.
I think in this day and age moving next door to a school and naively thinking that after 5.30 pm there will be complete peace and quiet from the school site is a bit misguided.
