Traffic lights Clapham Common Westside

Postby BFW » Mon May 14, 2018 7:13 pm

My teenage daughter and I almost got ran over today at the traffic light on Clapham Common westside opposite the playground ! We crossed carefully but a car accelerated when they saw the lights changing. We are both quite shaken as it was a close call.

I am totally fed up at how quickly the light change and how dangerous this crossing is. Cars speed down Clapham Common Westside like it was the M4!!!

This crossing is used by children going to the playground and the common. By children going to Belleville, Honeywell, parkgate, Eaton house, Thomas’ Bolingbroke.

It’s been dangerous for too long. Does anyone know the most effective way of contacting TFL so that they might actually do something for once?

Sorry I can't help with TFL but do let me know how you get on. We have the same problem with the pedstrian crossing at the top of St John's Hill where it meets East Hill and also where Battersea Rise meets Spencer Parks. Cars are speeding to get down to Wandsworth and I have also been nearly hit a few times. There have also been numerous accidents so keen to see some traffic lights put in/speeding camera or something done about it!!

No idea who to contact as the council do not seem to reply at all!

lets get rid of traffic lights and have more roundabouts and zebra crossings. The need/urge to accelerate will disappear
and we all love zebra crossings.
The traffic might flow better too..
ah oh, that is going against the anti car Nazi plan.. mustn't be allowed...

There are zebra crossings at the top of St John's Hill and cars do not stop. It is extremely dangerous!

We met our local counsellor about it (we took him to the crossing on Clapham Common Northside where my daughter was almost hit). They brought in tfl and claimed to study the problem but nothing was ever done. Now my daughter walks alone and all the lights/crossings along Clapham Common Westside and Northside scare me silly. A mum at school was actually hit at the zebra crossing between the 2 sections of the Common so that’s not necessarily better. I think the only thing for it is continuous pursuing of the people who are responsible for change.

With the support of the Wandsworth Lib Dems, I have this page up www.wandsworthlibdems.org.uk/safer_streets and I'd be happy to meet with you to talk through how to make progress. Drop me a line via info@wandsworthlibdems.org.uk

This consultation for Tooting Bec Road: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/tooting-bec/

Was as a result of a former petition that we ran - http://www.wandsworthlibdems.org.uk/let ... fe_for_all

In the Autumn, the Tories supported by Labour at the council voted to increase the number of signatures on road safety petitions from 25% (without Cllr support) 10% with Cllr support, to 51%, whilst keeping the number of KSI's (people killed or seriously injured) at the same level.

Those KSI metrics are:
3 people Killed or seriously injured within 50m of a junction in 3 consecutive years or
12 people Killed or seriously injured within a 1km stretch of road in a 1 year period.

Paper 17-298 which you can download here:
https://democracy.wandsworth.gov.uk/ieL ... 5284&Ver=4

TfL although it's a different highways authority, together with other highways authorities have a very similar approach to road danger reduction at present.

The best way to raise these issues with Transport for London is via their website at
https://tfl.gov.uk/help-and-contact/con ... oad-issues

Unfortunately if there is a problem with a traffic light anywhere in London (including those not on red routes) local councils in the capital are not allowed to fix or remedy them.

Councils are not permitted to change/amend timings or carry out any works whatsoever on any traffic light anywhere in London. Only TfL's engineers are allowed to do this work and so if people want to see traffic light timings change they will need to persuade TfL.

Thanks for the extra info Wandsworth Council.

Aside from the timings of traffic lights, can you confirm that councillors voted to make it harder for residents to petition with regards to road safety improvements (on council managed roads) in the autumn as per the link in the thread above?

With the Mayor of London also living in Wandsworth, one could imagine that the local politics may reflect some of the wider positions of the Mayor and therefore TfL.

Dear jon_events

We don't recognise the KSI statistics or thresholds you refer to above. We think they may possibly refer to TfL’s requirements for the installation of a speed camera.

Whenever there is a serious or fatal accident anywhere in the borough the council examines the police reports and also any coroner’s recommendations very thoroughly and if appropriate will introduce whatever measures are deemed necessary to improve safety conditions for the travelling public.
