Permission for a park picnic?

Postby lifechanger » Fri Jun 08, 2018 5:27 pm

Hi,

We are considering having a large picnic (approximately 50 people) in one of the Wandsworth parks following a Christening. Do we need to get a permit or some other permission from the council? We would likely have a gazebo but that would be the only "structure".

It's fine as long as you don't contravene bylaws.

A gazebo is fine as long as you take it away with you and don't obstruct any pathways.

As long as there is no loud music and - presumably - you're not selling alcohol - there won't be an issue.

I'm afraid this is not correct.

Enable, who manage Wandsworth Common on behalf of Wandsworth Council, say this on their website:

"If your event involves fewer than 50 people you don’t need special permission but you must consider and abide by the following:

* You may not put up a gazebo or any other structure in a park; use the natural shade/shelter provided by trees"

(See http://enablelc.org/parks/who-does-what/)

Best to call Enable and ask, if you want to be on the safe side.

There was a big event on Clapham Common last Saturday with a gazebo on the children's play area by the courts and cafe. The big no no's with Lambeth are bbq's, booze (in terms of sales and behaviour), litter and noise.
