So we're loosing Wandsworth's Homebase AND B&Q

Postby Denwand » Wed Aug 22, 2018 11:23 am

So the march of flat development continues near Wandsworth's riverside.

Shame they couldn't build-in more infrastructure like local shops, cafes, bars, chemist  etc as well...obviously no profit in that!

No, it's more mega plate-glass buildings and empty soulless windblown public areas where the only thing that moves are discarded fast-food junk as it swirls around in the wind.

Cynical or what? ☺️

At least they are *promising* 20% affordable housing...but how affordable?

I often site the example of Tesco in Kensington. have the store and build a load of flats on top.
this is a WBC responsibility, is joined up thinking and means I can get a brush on a Sunday morning.
I guess I'll have to drive to Shannon Corner for that now, right passed Krispee Kreeme.

It makes total sense to close the Homebase around the corner from Plough Lane near the Pikey camp.

Or take the example of the Sainsbury's in Wandsworth Road near Vauxhall bridge.. large car park, on top, large Sainsbury's, on top, flats!!

More overpriced apartments with an unspoilt view of the waste and recycling plant, or perhaps only the “affordable” ones will be river facing.

So were are we meant to buy our DIY stuff from now then ?

Won’t miss the overpriced loss making Homebase, but B&Q is essential to the area.

Wandsworth council, what are you doing - just want more council tax I guess ?

There is also another consideration, other than losing our local diy stores.  York Road is already fairly polluted and with buildings going up next to it when the Winstanley Estate is redeveloped and building at height next to the roundabout, there will be fewer places for the pollution to disperse.  Another factor is the way in which buildings also create wind tunnels (that sounds as though it should solve the first point but doesn't).

Memories:  when, as a novice, I bought my run down house and had little spare money, I was helped by: the builders merchants and the electrical supply shop at Clapham Junction; the builders merchants in Northcote Road; a shop (can't remember what) on Battersea Park Road...... and many more.  In each shop, when I had a job I needed to do, I would go in ask them how I should do it and buy the materials.  Without  their expert help, I would have been left living in a dump for far longer.  Note: I also was not faced with any sexism.

The worst thing is the lack of consideration of supporting infrastructure.  The Homebase site will have something like 389 flats with 89 car spaces, good luck to those living and parking in the Tonsleys! Also - school places?  Oh, and they promise to build a new entrance to the train station - so now we will be able to get even more people in rush hour onto the already overcrowded platforms.  Great thinking  :?

I think you directed that insult at me among others Star, for pointing out that poverty and other excuses you made for the violent criminals is misguided in that particular case and that some young black men have a big misogyny issue, as has been reported on in the wide press...

Anywaaaay - the better alternative to b&q is Screwfix (order and pay online and collect 5 minutes later). Other goodies are toolstation and Ironmongery Direct.

I'm not sure if I'm more upset about the closing of B&Q or the casual racism.
Is it still under risk. Nothing has happened yet.
