"Simple" Food Processor Large Enough For a Meal For Four - Recommendations Please?

Postby Denwand » Mon Sep 10, 2018 7:13 am

Hello all,

when we got married one of our wedding gifts was a Magimix 2000 - back in the late '80s this was thought to be the quality choice for a food processor.

Despite the bowl cracking (plastic bowls seem to be the weak point on an otherwise sturdy machine) it lasted 26 years until the replacement bowl's handle went and we decided it was about time our sturdy and reliable Magimix was replaced.

So 6 years ago we bought a Magimix 4200xl - very whizzy with 3 bowls so you could (allegedly) use the two smaller ones stacked inside for smaller jobs....In practice they were useless since in using one you dirtied the others..it also came with fruit juice blender, cream mixer etc etc when all we ever use it for is batter and cake mixing and chopping /shredding vegetables.

I was always suspicious of the thing since it seemed unnecessarily complicated and looked and felt too flimsy for the rugged work it had to do...and so it proved when the complex handle mechanism (to stop you starting it with the lid and/or chute off) exploded in a shower of tawdry plastic and tiny springs after 4 years..£45 bought a replacement but whilst slicing onions (surely a job a FP should handle easily) it jammed and made growling noises...Then ran slowly and now jams whilst shredding a small carrot...

Sorry about the long story but I'm lookinmg for recommendations for a machine that simply a) chops and slices     vegetables with a choice of ,say, 3 grater/cutters, b) mixes batter and cake mix and c) has a simple blade for making soups and pulping fruits. Controls just need to be on, off and pulse.

Can anyone recommend a simple and sturdy quality machine that can handle meals for four (ie not a mini-unit) that will see us though for another 30 years??? :D :o

AFAIK Magimix and Thermomix are two of the best known, each with quasi religious following (think of Apple vs Samsung), but the former is cheaper. Lidl sells its own even cheaper version, too

You may have a point there Southlondondaddy...

If I do the maths, to replace my Magimix with the same model (complete with another set of never-to-be-used  extras) , it would cost around £350...as it went phut after 6 years that's roughly £60 a year.

John Lewis (who could go wrong with John Lewis  :D ) sell a basic FP with a mixing blade, a cutting blade and three grating/slicing discs for £60.

If it lasts just 13 months I'm already ahead!

Hmm...

The John Lewis thingy probably cannot cook in the same way the others can; these things are typically great for stuff like risotto or sauces, which require lots of continuos stirring. But one must cook lots of risottos to justify the £1k price tag of the Thermomix!

The Lidl thing is this, at £229 https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/Monsieur-Cuisine-14873.htm
I don't know anyone who has used it, but I'd consider it.

Mr NVN has been banging on about wanting a Thermomix for years.

I can't help but this it would just gather dust in a cupboard - I'd love to know if anyone uses them on a regular basis...

Just to clarify - not for me to use - for him!

I suddenly wondered if that made him sound like a Victoria husband!

Thanks Southlondondaddy once more for the info - I've got some studying to do!

TBH since we got a Braun hand blender for soups, sauces etc a lot of the work we used the FP for has gone away.

If I analyse what I use it for now it's mostly batter mixing, chopping for coleslaw, cheese grating etc.

Also since both of my boys will be in Uni by the end of September I guess that's even less work it has to do...the attraction of the cheapy-no-frills end of the market beckons...

(On top of this I a few years back I bought a bells & whistles Miele washing machine and 90% of the options/buttons to be pressed have never been used - and it cost about 3 times the price of the base Miele model (I mean who needs a special program for sports-socks?  :D

I Had the exact same experience with my Magimix- bowl handles broke and had to be expensively replaced. I invested in a Thermomix a couple of years ago and it is absolutely brilliant and has definitely paid for itself. It chops, weighs, mixes, whisks, blends, cooks, steams, makes dough, and it now connects by Wi-fi to thousands of automated recipes on the “Cookidoo” website which sync with the machine. The only things the Thermomix doesn’t do is grate and slice. I still have my old Magimix tucked away in the cupboard which comes out for large jobs, but for everyday use I got a Sage (Heston Blumenthal) all in one food mixer which is basically a stick blender with a mini food processor attachment. It works brilliantly and is perfect for smaller jobs and definitely big enough for a family of four.
