Wandsworth Council has increased the maximum fine for littering from £100 to £150 as part of it's zero tolerance approach to littering.

Increasing the maximum fine sends a clear message that dropping any litter, whether it’s a crisp packet, cigarette butt or sweet wrapper is unacceptable. Those caught are able to pay a reduced fee if paid within 10 days of issue.

Cllr Steffi Sutters, Wandsworth Council's environment spokesperson, pointed out that, "More serious fly-tipping offences will continue to be dealt with by prosecution, as will anyone who fails to pay a fixed penalty.”

'Tis a shame WBC cannot empty their litter bins on the WBC side from Clapham Common.
Many's a time I have walked past overflowing bins on the common along Nightingale Lane to Clapham South Tube.
It is not good enough for WBC to blame the public. If there is a need for weekly, daily or hourly litter bin collections, then so be it. WBC are at fault here and its not NVN's responsibility to concur with WBC which they just did by publishing the 2nd paragraph.

In WBC's defence they do a great job clearing the bins around the Magdalen estate / Wandsworth Common west side.

However I'm a bit cynical about fines for littering since a while back I noticed the Litter "Wardens" (or Community Wardens or whatever they are called) at work.

I was waiting outside Clapham Junction station on St. John's Hill for a friend and saw them targeting smokers who were rushing into the station and stubbing their cigarettes before they went in.

To make it clear I think smoking and the reslting butts are filthy BUT there were no bins no wall ashtrays anywhere near this particular entrance and the wardens seemed to be picking easy targets and probably got a bonus for hundreds of fines...they could easily get one person a minute.

Meanwhile around the corner the streets were awash with discarded Mc Donalds, KFC half eaten chicken pieces and boxes, coffee cups, soft drink cups, plastic bags full of heaven knows what etc etc etc .... the fag butts probably would have filled a small coffee cup in volume but the other stinking, rodent attracting mess would have filled several bin liners - easy target?
