Giant new children's playground at Kew Gardens

Postby charlotte_admin » Tue Jun 04, 2019 1:03 pm

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has opened its most ambitious design project in recent years, with the creation of a giant new Children’s Garden. Covering 10,000m², it’s the size of nearly 40 tennis courts, and has been designed by Kew garden designers around the elements that plants need to grow: earth, air, sun and water. Children will be able to play and explore as they wind their way through a landscape filled with over 100 mature trees, discovering hidden treasures and adventure, and developing their love of nature, plants and the outdoors along the way. A 4m high canopy walk is wrapped around a 200-year-old English Oak tree to give children a different view, and the playground is aimed primarily at children aged from two to 12.

Children enter the garden via a tunnel of scented Star jasmine and there the adventure begins. From the Earth Garden including a giant sand pit with a quirky play hut village, onto the Air Garden with its winding paths, hammocks and trampolines, little explorers are surrounded by mature trees as well as new plantings. Then onto the Sun Garden with its sensory adventure before the Water Garden with stepping stones, water pump and a splash pool....Here comes summer!

This is great news, however, just wanted to warn anyone heading there that there has been a lot of heated discussion about it on SW18 mums on FB - apparently you need to get a timed entry ticket, and stories of people who went there only to find out that by 11 am, all the tickets were gone, or that the next available session was at 5pm.

Apparently you should go early, i.e. as soon as Kew opens, and head straight to the playground gates to secure your timed entry ticket.
