Unpleasant situation around Clapham common station

Postby Laurapan » Mon May 27, 2019 1:11 pm

Hi all,

I have been living in Clapham for a year and since I moved here I can see a costant situation of degrade around Clapham common station, in particular in the garden just next to it and opposite to Waitrose.

There are permanently drunk homeless people, people begging and a group of at least 10 Romany gypsies gathering there. The group of gypsies concerns me the most. They spend all day in the park littering, drinking and looking around for anything they can ste or chuck out of the rubbish bins. Also, I have seen them with tents and sleeping bags camping in the common at night. Are they allowed to be there? The amount of rubbish they leave behind is incredible. They are ruining the decor of the common and I have also seen them a couple of time cat calling some young women in a very inappropriate way.

You can blame the EU for this one. The Lisbon Treaty, forced upon the people of Europe back in 2009, gave special minority status to the Roma gypsies and then from Jan 2014 Romania and Bulgaria were given free movement of people.

So there is little that can now be done until we leave the EU and make our own laws and decisions on who we allow to reside in the country.

@Ratski...Tsssch, what nonsense. The Gypsy travellers have drifted around Europe (and the world) for centuries.. it’s what they do. ..and my Italian wife and French neighbours would take exception to your inaccurate and offensive little piece of Brexitism.

@Laurapan - there have been drinkers (mostly British) outside Clapham Common tube and, ironically, the Temperance fountain for decades.
The area is being landscaped now but there’s little you can do. The council have been redesigning popular homeless hangout spots to get the public to use them more but unless you can think of radical solutions to displaced and troubled people i suggest you buy them a sandwich like everyone else and have a moan about the rubbish directly to them if it bothers you enough to say so.

The poverty gap is drastically widening in London and this won’t get any better soon.
Increase in homelessness and marginalised individuals is now visible and tangible across London like never before. This means people camp and hangout where they can. The issue of hygiene is a consequence to that too... there are no loos for them. I am apolitical here and hopefully factual, this is smg I’ve noticed 2 years ago.

http://aceofclubs.org.uk/ Is Amazing! I have only volunteered on one occasion but do intend to help out again.

Here are my thoughts:
Can I just encourage those who would be interested to do so, please share this info to the homeless. In my experience, they may already know of Ace of Clubs and have visited in the past. Not everyone wants help but we can only try.
Example: Met a lovely homeless guy at Sainsburys car park Wandsworth. I wrote down the info. On giving him the paper, found he had already attended in the past and asked to send his greetings to certain named staff. I encouraged him to return, so hopefully he will. He seemed to really appreciate that small piece of paper and tucked it away in his pocket, although he could have tossed it aside as he already knew the address etc.
That's life, we all know there is a better path for us but sometimes we just need a little push, reminder and/or encouragement!

I didn't know "Brexitism" was a word... Who cares about your French and Italian neighbours?

I know many travellers; there are good and bad, however, the vast majority are quite poor and I do see more and more loitering these days.

It doesn't help the poor British people here if they have to increasingly compete with poor foreigners for jobs. I write this as an Asian American foreigner.

I am saddened by the amount of homeless people I see. It is getting harder to 'get by'...

@ sea hibiscus.. I care about his French and Italian neighbours. In this country we call them people and it doesn't matter where they're from..!

Poor British people worst off because of foreigners..??? Really??

You can't seriously believe this ridiculous populist propaganda.

Pathetic

SW4al used their neighbours to make an irrelevent post. Please reread it.

I, nor you I believe, know these neighbours personally, so why should I care what they think? Are they taking part in the discussion? Who said they aren't people?

SW4al brought French and Italians into the thread, to deflect, so take your problems up with them?

I believe in this country you are taught to read and write, did you miss out on the former?

Perhaps you live in a bubble, and haven't talked to people struggling and working low skilled jobs. They have said that over competitiveness in the jobs market has negatively effected them. It is a complex issue, (for those with comprehension problems, that doesn't mean it's 'all foreigners'!) however, ignoring the struggles of those born and raised here is pathetic!

I did not write "all" foreigners; I specifically wrote "poor", which you intentionally left out, so your attempt at spin have failed, and made it clear you lack comprehension skills.

There is no propaganda in my post. You simply got butt hurt and went on an ill informed rant.

Stop trying to be a white knight, and start *reading* what has been written, and *trying* to understand...

@ sea hibiscus.. clearly my post was too close the bone.. wasn't it?
Your original post, however subtle, had clear undertones of xenophobia.
The myth of white underclasses suffering because of immigration has been systematically debunked throughout history. Surely you must know this.

P.S.

I think it's quite obvious who you voted for at the last US presidential elections.
