Man found dead in road in Wimbledon Park 'may have been victim of hit-and-run'

Postby Community Editor » Wed Jan 22, 2020 6:54 am

A man found dead in the road early yesterday morning may have been the victim of a hit-and-run.

Police were called at about 5.40am to a report of a body at the side of Durnsford Road in Wimbledon Park, south London.

Officers attended with paramedics and the victims was pronounced dead at the scene but no vehicle had stopped.

Durnsford Road was cordoned off along a one-mile stretch from Plough Lane, Wimbledon to Penwith Road, Earlsfield.

A police tent covered the body as forensic officers searched for clues near the Durnsford Road bridge and The Woodman pub.

Photographer Mark Westwood said: “It happened near quite a notorious bridge which has clear signs saying ‘no overtaking’ but people race over it all the time. There have been three or four fatalities in the time I have lived in Wimbledon Park.”

Officers from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating with colleagues from the South West Basic Command Unit.

A spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to a report of a body in the road in Durnsford Road. A man was pronounced dead at the scene. No vehicle had stopped at the location.”

Anyone with information that may assist police should call 101, quoting CAD1025/Jan21.
