Good first bank account?

Postby helliebee » Mon Sep 25, 2023 10:24 am

Hi,

Has anyone opened a current account for their tween/teen that they would recommend?  My daughter is of an age now where she wants to save up her pocket/birthday money and then be able to use it via a debit card when out and about.

The days of collecting Natwest pig moneyboxes or Midland griffin coins seem to be long behind us - who to sign up with for any good 21st century perks?!

Thanks!

Take a look at NatWest Rooster account. If you take a free current account for yourself then the attached Rooster account with debit card is free of charge.

All major banks let you open a current account with a contactless card from 11.
Also recommend Revolut for kids if you want more control and want to see where and when they spend.

We did use Go Henry, but they charge a monthly fee to have the account and then when a transaction between two Go Henry accounts went wrong and our daughter was missing £30 from her account it took me ages to get the money back from them, weeks of phone calls etc, so I wouldn't recommend them and we closed our account.  However, I see Lloyds have a new 11-15 yr old account and others for up to 19 yr olds, which look good.  Our daughter is now with HSBC but I can't see her spending on a shared app, so I may well switch to this one.

for anyone with younger kids, HyperJar is the best account for kids under 11.

Unlike Go Henry, it’s totally free and the kids get a debit card that you can freeze (or ban certain retailers eg xbox !) …
