Clapham North Tube commute

Postby Bat120 » Fri Mar 29, 2024 7:01 pm

Hi
My daughter is looking at flats in the Clapham North tube area and is being put off by tales of overcrowding and waiting outside the station in the mornings.

Can anyone shed any light on how bad this is? What time is best to avoid? Presume Mondays and Fridays are better?

Thanks!

It’s very bad. I join the tube earlier but it’s often that no one can get on the tube at Clapham North as it’s so full already which is what will be causing the queues outside the tube. But if I lived there I would walk to Stockwell in the morning which solves the problem for both lines. Lots of people get off the Northern line to change for the Victoria line and it’s only the second stop for the Victoria Line so normally decent space.

It is bad between 8am and 8:45am. If she can commute before or after, that’s fine.
I would add that Monday and Friday are ok as there are less people going to the office those days.
Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday definitely quite bad at that time. It is not that often that there are queues outside, but even if you are able to go down to the platform you may have to wait 3, 4, 5 trains to get in.
But indeed it is possible to walk to Stockwell or even jump on one of the many buses going along clapham road. Just a few minutes to Stockwell.

Definitely an issue. The Northern Line is packed from south of Balham now compared to 20 years ago and by the time it reaches Clapham North she would really struggle to get on a train. All the stations from Clapham South to Stockwell have regular queuing outside and Clapham Common and North have the extra issue of a single platform. The solution as others have mentioned is to walk or bus it to Stockwell.

The Northern line can be busy but I’m not sure why people say it’s terrible, it just depends on commuting times. I usually take the Northern line to Bank on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 7.30am and 8.50am with no issues. I have turned up to find the tube closed but only an handful of times over the years and those times I’ve then taken the bus to Vauxhall, which is pretty efficient way to get around. Worth adding on here that, (so far) I’ve never been late to work because of the tube (like to be at my desk for 8.30am). if your daughter sighs up to X (twitter) she’ll get alerts if any delays are occurring. All in all I’d tell her not worry, just be organised with her commuting time.. Clapham is a fun place to be!

I would resolve the issue with both lines by walking to amanda the adventurer first thing in the morning.
