Laundry facilities. Cellar or first floor?

Postby BenandJerry » Fri Jul 12, 2024 3:44 pm

We are trying to decide whether to move our laundry facilities into the cellar or whether to have them on the first landing where a small bathroom used to be.

I do know that people do the latter, but don't know anyone personally who has this set up so I can't ask how it works in practice. Is it better not to be walking up and down a million stairs or is too noisy?!

Hoping some people on here might be able to shed some light about what their experiences are and if they would recommend one or other?!

Thanks!

Where will you be drying the laundry?  Will you hang stuff outside or do you tumble dry everything?

Mine is in the cellar, my friend’s is on the first floor.

I think my friend has the better set-up to be honest.

Her kids put all their laundry in the laundry room as it’s on the same floor as their bedrooms. My kids just leave it all over their bedroom floor so I have to gather it all from all over the house and traipse down 2 floors, wash and dry it all then take it all back up. It drives me mad.

Or maybe she just has better trained kids?!

On the first floor.

It is life changing.

@abbevillemummy
I told my kids that if they wanted clean they had to bring them every evening. The didnt believe me when I had said I wont wash and I wont chase them. After the first time they didnt have a clean uniform they were peeved. The second time they believed me. Now they do being their clothes.
However my battle with my eldest is for her NOT to bring a pile of clothes to the laundry room on a sunday night after her “eveything shower” when I thought the basket was empty… 😤
Good luck they can do it.

First floor is definitely the way to go. Why would you want to trudge up and downstairs with all that washing?

We have ours on the first floor and it is really convenient.
The 1st floor room at the back of the house is a bathroom so we have washing machine in a cupboard on the landing + bathroom with laundry basket next door. I leave laundry to dry in this bathroom as well when I don’t tumble dry.

First floor.  It's a no-brainer.  After all, most items washed in a washing machine are clothes, bed linen & bath linen ...  all of which live on the upper floors.  Why would you have it anywhere else?  One place a washing machine should never be is in the kitchen!  A kitchen is for washing dirty dishes, not dirty underwear.  Ugh! Unhygienic.

Dimelda, not everyone has space not to have it in the kitchen.

We have a separated laundry and on the first floor and very convenient. Previous home the washer/ dryer was in the kitchen.

Would definitely not want to go up and down a lot by having it in the cellar if you have the option, first floor is best for getting it in and out.

Starr:  You have a point but, if houses in this country were designed properly, space should always be allocated for a separate laundry room - on whatever floor.   But no - most seem to prefer 'fashionable' massive kitchens, with heaps of wasted space .... leaving no room for a separate laundry, which ideally will include the washer/dryer, tubs, lines for hanging damp items, etc.   A proper laundry in other words which, in my opinion, every house should have.  Fitted kitchens were the rage when they were first introduced here decades ago ... but apparently nobody thought of fitted laundries.  Maybe one day the penny will drop.
