Hotel recommendations in Crete

Postby very curly hair » Tue Jul 16, 2024 6:12 pm

Has anyone been to any lovely hotels in Crete recently. Thinking of heading there late September with friends (mostly couples) and most would like to stay in a hotel possibly with a spa. No one knows the island very well so any suggestions of an area for consideration or a hotel would be amazing.

Thanks!

Many years ago now we had superb service at the Amathus Beach Hotel near Limassol.  I have no idea if it is still that good, but worth a look.

And if you go to Crete then everyone will tell you to visit Knossos, which is very impressive.  But think too about renting a car and driving over the island to see the wonderful, atmospheric palace of Phaistos.  One extraordinary thing about the ancient Minoan civilisation is that although it was obviously eye wateringly wealthy no trace has ever been found of fortifications or defences or military activity.

Silly me - the Amathus Beach is in Cyprus! But Phaistos is definitely Crete.

Hi VeryCurlyHair (great name!)

September is the perfect time to go to Crete - the sun and sea are warm, and the crowds have vanished. In my opinion, the loveliest parts of Crete are Sissi and Elounda Bay. There are many hotels and it depends on budget, but you could try looking at the Castello Boutique Hotel in Sissi as it's adults only and has a great spa; you can walk down to the harbour for tavernas. Alternatively, the Elounda Mare is a Relais & Chateaux and has a fantastic Six Senses Spa.

Feel free to reply if you'd like any further help :)

I have personally been to Daios cove which is gorgeous with a pretty beach and a great selection of rooms with lovely sea views. There are enough restaurants on site so you won’t get bored and the food was all delicious 😋.
I also have a few other hotels that I could recommend if you want to get in touch. I work with Travel Matters a local business and I would be more than happy to help - it won’t cost you any more than booking directly ☺️

I went to Crete a while back with friends, and we had an amazing time. If you’re looking for a hotel with a spa, I’d recommend checking out Elounda. It’s a lovely area with a range of beautiful hotels. We stayed at the Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas, which was perfect for relaxation and had a great spa. Another area to consider is Agios Nikolaos, which is nearby and also has some fantastic places to stay. For flights, consider looking for cheap business class flights—I snagged a great deal last time, and it made the trip a lot more comfortable.

Chania is a fabulous old City. Less touristy than the east. Hire a car, explore. A drive south to Peleochora is a hair raising delight. Loutro on the south coast is only accessible on foot of by boat. Ferries go from Chora Sfakion. Don’t be alarmed if you see Sfakiots walking about carrying rifles. Elafonisi beach will quieter in September too. Falasarna is charming but be aware part of the area has a nudist beach.
If you stay at a resort hotel make sure you explore too. There are some great places and it a very friendly island. Put some money into to the local economy rather than the mega corporations who own the spa hotels. Small family owned restaurants are great. Enjoy.
