Fireworks Season Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe and Comfortable
With fireworks season upon us - Diwali 31st Oct -1st Nov and Guy Fawkes 1st Nov plus some displays 2nd and 3rd November, here are some useful tips from The Dogfather to help your dog feel safe and stay calm during the celebrations:
  1. Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy spot in your home where your dog can retreat. Add their favourite blanket, toys, and maybe some treats to make it a comforting haven.
  2. Use Calming Aids: If your dog is particularly anxious, consider calming aids like pheromone diffusers, anxiety vests (Thunder Shirts are very good and available on Amazon), or natural supplements. Consult your vet to find the best options.
  3. Keep Curtains and Windows Closed: Dimming lights and closing curtains can muffle the sounds and block the flashing lights. Keeping windows closed also reduces noise levels inside.
  4. Play Soothing Sounds: Turn on calming music or white noise to help mask the sounds of fireworks. I tune into LBC so lots of talking and current affairs for your dog (clever mutts). This can be especially helpful in drowning out sudden bangs.
  5. Provide Distractions: Engage your dog with puzzle toys or long-lasting treats to focus their attention on something positive.
  6. Stay Calm and Supportive: Dogs pick up on our emotions. Try to stay calm, act normally, and offer reassurance without overdoing it. A gentle pet or some soothing words can go a long way.

Let’s make this season as stress-free as possible for our four legged friends!
