Often, we try to boost children's vocabulary by providing a long list of ambitious words. This approach can sometimes backfire.
Students may feel overwhelmed.
Or they ignore the list as they're already juggling different elements, such as structure and description.
Common outcomes:
Children rarely use any of the given words or they tend not to think of their own exciting words to use.
A more effective approach: Ignite the desire to write
When children are motivated to express themselves, they naturally seek out more powerful words. They feel good because they’re in charge. This is half the battle won!
How to spark this desire:
It’s simple.
First, master the basics: Before including several ambitious words, ensure your child has a strong foundation in:
- Story Structure: A clear beginning, middle and end.
- Description: Vivid imagery and sensory details.
- Paragraph Fluency: A logical flow between paragraphs.
Why this works: Once children have secured these skills and they reflect on their work, they’ll often identify areas to improve, such as the use of ambitious words or metaphors, for example.
When this happens, children are on the path to progression and success because:
a.) The fuel to progress comes from the child, they are self-motivated and recognise their next step(s) to progress.
b.) They are ready to implement their goals as the basic skills are firmly in place.
Ultimately, when we empower children to take ownership of their work, they're more motivated to improve and therefore more likely to achieve their 11+ English goals.
