Increased Air Traffic Noise across Wandsworth Common area

Postby for.fun » Wed Jul 25, 2012 8:44 am

Can anyone tell me -is it because the skies are so clear the last few days [hoorah!] or because of the Olympics [and maybe flight paths have changed],but there seems to be more air traffic across Wandsworth common area than I've ever noticed before ?
Planes are very low and coming in every 90 seconds all day :( !!
They are waking us up early in the morning and persistantly seem to be making such a noise-that even my young daughter noticed it yesterday -so definitely something has changed .
Any info please? Thanks

Yes, they are worse than ever & even earlier - there was a post a few weeks about a trial at LHR.

We get woken up EVERY day - even my son is waking up every day at 5.45 rather than the usual 7.

We are all exhausted & fed up by it. We are on the West Side of Wandsworth Common.

I have just spoken to complaints dept at BAA concerning a noise complaint of increased air activity -he insures me nothing has changed in the past 10 years?!!
He said Phase 2 of the Heathrow experiment doesn't affect us and we must just be noticing it because of using our gardens more or having windows open or because of having small children.
Frankly, I found that quite patronising, :x seeing as my daughter is now 11 [and noticed the planes herself yesterday and alerted me], we have lived in our house for 15 yrs and in the area for 25 -so I don't think he could argue on any of those points.
I don't think we can all be 'imagining' the aircraft noise seems to be increasing?

Anyone who has any info would be very much appreciated please.

Just been reading in the Aug 2012 edition of Brightside (free magazine from Wandsworth Council) re a flight pattern trial at Heathrow Airport which I think explains the increased aircraft noise.....

Report flight trial impacts
"The Council is urging local people to report the impacts of a second flight pattern trial at Heathrow Airport. The second phase of the "Operational Freedoms" trials began in July and will run until March 2013. During this period the airport operator BAA will be permitted to land more planse during established daytime respite periods when residents would normally be given a break from aircraft noise. Reports can be made online at http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/heathrow trial. Alternatively you can complain direct to BAA at noise_complaints@baa.com or by calling 0800344 844."

There is also an ad on the same page of the magazine (page 26) that has been placed by BAA which talks about the trail in more detail. If you don't have your copy of the magazine you can download it from the Wandsworth Council website: http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/info/20010 ... brightside

Hope this helps......

I am losing my sanity over the constant noise and am considering moving out of the area altogether. The above link isn't working - can anybody recommend the correct place to complain about this?
Many thanks!

Apologies, I typed an extra space into the address when I copied it from the magazine. Try this one....http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/heathrowtrial, alternatively you could always try calling Wandsworth Council direct perhaps?

It really pays off to complain about the noise!
I've been reading through (though not extensively!) the report on Phase 1 and they do note on page 115 of the key findings that "Fewer respite periods is a weakness" and that complaints numbers have increased.
http://www.heathrowairport.com/static/H ... report.pdf
Complaints will keep being analysed in Phase 2, so if the constant noise bothers you, please log your complaint via one of the following:
Online: http://www.heathrowairport.com/noise/he ... an-enquiry,
Email: noise_complaints@baa.com
Telephone: 0800 344 844.

So hopefully we will have our lovely, quiet neighbourhoods back afterwards!

it is really important to complain as the number of complaints is important when deciding how future operations at Heathrow will be run. Have a read of my original post:
http://www.nappyvalleynet.com/have-you- ... 21324.html
also you can join Hacan who campaign for Londoners to have decent spells of respite and a proper night's sleep. They have a very informative website:

It is still possible to make complaints about noise and it is worthwhile doing so as we got some good news today. Make sure you get heard by logging regularly your complains onto the following website:

http://www.heathrowairport.com/noise/he ... an-enquiry

....and check below the article from today and how the high number of complaints made a difference

I did complain, getting totally fed up with it - and having read online somewhere that 20 years ago you could hardly hear planes here, but then they changed something in the holding pattern. I wrote stating all of this and had this response, my conclusion - complaining has made no difference. Perhaps we should all make a more concerted effort to complain and raise the area from low to high?

Email response as follows:

Many thanks for your email of the 6th October, I am sorry that you have been disturbed by aircraft noise.

I have noted the comments you have made regarding the flightpaths into Heathrow. You may be aware that your property is not actually under a stack, and is instead under the path from the stack to the main landing flightpath known as the Instrument Landing System. Although the stacks are not over the sea, they are not over London, as almost all of the stacking areas are outside the M25 in the Home Counties. It is unusual for us to receive complaints from these areas which would suggest that the level of disturbance is low.

Your property is not under a flightpath, however the it is an area that may experience overflight from aircraft coming from the stack to join the ILS. The trial is designed to make the airport more efficient in order to reduce the amount of time that aircraft spend in the stack which if successful should lead to a reduction in pollution.

I’m not sure where you have read that stacking was only introduced in 1990, but I have to tell you that this is not correct. The stacks have been in their current position since the 1960s and are the responsibility of the Government. Heathrow is not able to change the position of the stacks, and the Government would be unable to change them without public consultation.

I hope this information is helpful.

Yours sincerely,

Thanks Tatters. It sounds like greek to me. All i know is that the last 3 weeks, it's been really quiet. Is it just because of the wind or have they reduced the number of trial?

I remember several weeks ago hearing planes every 3 minutes. It was a nightmare. Planes were also flying much lower.

I think i'll keep complaining. I believe it makes a difference. I have just heard on Sunday that they are now looking at Stanstead.

ON reflection last night, I think you are right. Sounds like we need more people to complain to actually get them to see we are in a problem area. I may also take it up with our M.P. Has anyone else had any responses yet?
