Blinds in children's room - found the solution! Post Reply

For those of you who have posted before asking for black out blinds that would let any light on the sides, or for whoever who like me have been searching high and low, or for any other type of window treatments...

Hi supergirl,

The blind is actually called a roman blind and it needs to be blackout lined,
I have attached a couple of pictures of a roman blind I made recently for a little girls room so it enabled their daughter not to wake up at the crack of dawn.
I was rather impressed with the customer as he fitted it himself with his wife and it was over 3mts wide. I think it only took them about 20 mins after I explained how to fit but I do mounted it on a lath and corded it so it would be easy for anyone to fit if they are willing to have ago. Also they told me everybody else they had approached wanted to sell them a rotary track as well and the only track available in that width is a silent gliss rotary track and it would have been £400 - £500 to buy the track from them. Also he has 5 windows that width as well. There are rotary tracks on the market and they come with a 5 year guarantee for parts, silent gliss guarantee is also 5 years as well but the other tracks are a fraction of the price and do the same thing.

The picture is misleading but i am talking about the blind underneath.

It is a blackout blind that comes with a slim box at the top (so the roller is not on show) to not let light in at the top and with sides. The track is inside so no worries about little children playing with them and potentially hurting themselves.

It is like a velux blind for shash windows.

To give Craig a call, it takes about 10 days.

Hi Supergirl,

sorry about that, it sounds like a cassette roller blind, but usually without the frame that goes around the inside of the frame without another blind or curtains on top it will still let the light in down the sides, I agree that it will stop the light coming over the top but not the sides, these have been around for years without the side frames they do look rather smart, but once the frames are installed down either side and the bottom they do look rather ugly.

Roz with all due respect i think you need to pause and think and then come back when you know what you are talking about.

It is NOT what you describe, it doesnt let the light in on the side as it is fitted on the window frame.

You may or may not find them ugly, it is EXACTLY the same as a velux blind (which you probably find ugly) without a stainless steel frame but a white one.

I am also having lovely roman blinds in lovely fabrics fitted by Craig if you must know.

I (and others who have posted in the past) need 100% black out for sleeping because this is what they like and these blinds do a perfect job for shash windows. So i am only sharing something i have found fir others to use if they need it. I have been using smthg like that for years but in my own DIY version

(It would be nice if trades dont jump on a thread at the first opportunity to advertised directly or in a subtle way like you just did.)

Thanks for posting as I would love to find a nicer looking blackout solution than the Velcro easy blind I currently have. On your photo the window is in a recess. Do you think the blind would work on a normal sash window?

Since it is fixed on the window frame, i am sure it is possible.

But do give Craig a call or drop him an email, he is the one to talk to.

I have used him before and then now for these blinds. He is a really nice chap and he will answer any questions you have.

My DIY solution was using blu tack but velcros were going to be my next move had i not find these. They are easy and great: up light, down complete black out! So easy and yet nobody does it!

That looks very clever! I can't tell from the pics, and know nothing about Velux, are the white frames around the edge of the blackout part of the blind or are they attached to the frame for the blind to sit in as you pull it down?

I do apologise I have looked at the picture on my laptop and I can see the frame that goes around the sides as well, as long as you like it when its up or down thats the main thing. They are costly as they where originally designed for commerical purposes i.e. showing films etc.

MrsAmanda: Yes the side and bottom bars are fixed channels to seal the blind and take up any slack on the sides where frames are not strait.

For me it is good value for money.

how does it work with the door handles? or are your door handles at the bottom of the window?

Looks good, velux blinds are brilliant so if it can be fitted to any window might be a perfect solution!

This was the exact purpose of my post, sharing this great idea - very simple yet you can't find that.

@ Twice as nice: I am not sure how it would work. I have texted him your question and hoepfully he'll reply on Monday. On my windows the handles are at the bottom so not an issue for me. I'll keep you posted!
