Decent dinner party wine? Post Reply

Might anyone be kind and recommend a decent couple of bottles of dinner party wine? Hosting this weekend and we don’t drink a lot but our guests do!!

Depending where you live drop in to The Wine Twit at 85 NIghtingale Lane.  If you tell them the menu you are planning then they will definitely suggest suitable wines, and possibly quite unusuak, interesting ones.  And they cater for all price ranges except the very cheapest.

Agree with Chorister The Wine Twit is great as is Philglass and Swiggot. But, if you cant get there, I usually offer Malbec for red and White Burgundy for white with Sauternes for pudding wine (if you are going that far!) these will be great with most things. Waitrose is also very good and has a great range for each of these. Enjoy!

Can I piggy back off it and ask for recommendations of a nice bottle of wine to take round to friends when invited for dinner? I have a lot of friends who are really into their wine and I always feel very clueless in this situation!

It's probably the same answer - speak to the Wine Twit, especially for people who appreciate wine, as he is able to offer some unusual wines that may be new to them (and you) - it's normally worth 'fessing up if you do take something unusual, say you thought it might be worth a try.  And if you want them to drink it while you are there take red rather than white because of needing to serve white cooler.

I would take flowers or chocolates instead. If they know a lot about wine they probably have lots of it anyway and don’t need any more. My husband is very into wine and we have a cellar full of the stuff so I always find it a bit annoying when people bring us yet another bottle to add to the collection (which at the rate we drink it will be inherited by our great grandchildren!) I’d much rather have some nice flowers.
