Wandsworth food compost system - no liner bags provided - ridiculous

Postby muddyboots » Sat Sep 21, 2024 10:24 am

I dutyfully started using the food compost bins, but to my surprise when the first roll ran out I found out Wandsworth won’t supply them .

So they introduce a new scheme, which was not exactly welcomed with enthusiasm , then don’t supply liners as they do with general recycling .
WHY??

Makes no sense and just risks the scheme failing because of inertia and people not being organised or prompted.

It should have been costed into the plan!

Another bad labour decision….

You can buy compostable liners in pretty much any supermarket - the specification is on the Council website. It will cost you pennies a week. If doing that to help the environment really is too much trouble and expense then there really is little hope.

The liners will degrade if they get wet so the council couldn't distribute them as they do the recycling bags

You don't have to use the food compost bins if you don't want to

I will carry on, I was just surprised because I assumed it would be the same logic as recycling a bags being provided.

I’m sure the council could have found a way to supply them.

My new set has been ordered online, thanks for tip to look in the supermarket. All new to me, is never really spotted them.

I just know that if you I introduce a new system you need to make it as easy as possible for people to use it to encourage participation.

If you run short you could improvise and use the compostable bags some newspapers or other products get delivered in these days?

My 3 adult children all live in different boroughs with kitchen compost collections: Lewisham, Sutton and Ealing. None of them supply the bags. It's just something you buy. I'm sure the council don't want people using the bags for loads of other things as they are a convenient size!
I find the supermarket bags too flimsy and buy stronger ones on line.
Worth persevering!

I have been told the compostable bags are now available at the library - could someone confirm this?

I’ve just been to Balham Library and they had bags there. Aren’t we lucky!

Sorry if this is a stupid question but do we actually need to use the bags?? Or can we not just put the food straight into the caddies?
(Yes I know thats messier...)

For WBC to run this food waste scheme, costs us taxpayers over £1.1m a year.

Easier to put this all in your normal black rubbish bags and save us all £££

It’s a massive waste of money and I asked the collection guys, they recon about half the households have already stopped putting the food waste out.

I know it's a bold suggestion, but instead of talking to the collection guys why not find out the facts?  Segregated food waste is recycled into an anaerobic digester which generates renewable energy and an environmentally friendly fertiliser.  Why not encourage everyone to do it?

We gave up already as the foxes can open the bins.
Wandsworth should have learnt from Lambeth and bought the bins that are fox proof

To be honest we have stopped after weeks of hit and miss collections and scattered rubbish.
As an added bonus the recycling, which was collected with no issue until this summer, is now also missed on a weekly basis as the new crew doesn’t collect from the front garden anymore. The council keep telling they should and to keep the bags there and just report the missed collection. So every week another team has to come out for the missed bags.
Such a waste a money!

The Wandsworth website suggests that they don’t provide more liners afterwards, same as most other (labour or non labour) councils who recycle food waste. I don’t think you have to use a liner, it just suggests that it can make it less messy and smelly.

Just to add something positive about the service, I’ve found it really efficient so far - they collect on time, every week, and the foxes don’t seem to be able to get in. I’d say most, if not all, of our street seem to leave food waste out every week. For those who do have foxes getting into their food waste bins could you consider putting a heavy stone or something similar on top of it?
