This Saturday, children at WenLin Chinese School participated in an engaging, hands-on learning experience, creating intricate leaf art while learning about 霜降 (Shuāngjiàng), the 18th of the 24 solar terms, which marks the first frost of the season. The activity allowed children to explore the rich colours of autumn while practising their Mandarin language skills through creative expression.
The 24 solar terms is an ancient Chinese calendar system that divides the year into 24 periods, each reflecting seasonal changes and natural phenomena. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016, the system continues to play a significant role in Chinese culture, guiding agricultural practices, festivals, and customs.
WenLin Chinese School, located in SW London, is well-known for its innovative teaching approach, blending cultural activities with language education. Through this seasonal art project, the students not only developed their artistic skills but also deepened their understanding of traditional Chinese culture, making the learning process both meaningful and enjoyable.
The leaf art creation helped children connect with the concept of 霜降, celebrating the change of seasons in an educational and artistic way. This unique approach to learning embodies WenLin Chinese School’s commitment to fostering creativity, cultural awareness, and language proficiency in its students.
