Clapham Common bins…

Postby Lepresidente » Mon Oct 28, 2024 7:31 pm

Why is every bin on Clapham Common full to the brim and exploding everywhere & littered with bags of dog **** on top . I observed this on an ordinary Monday early afternoon …

A) Are Lambeth council so incompetent they can’t arrange regular bin collection on the common ? How about they spend some of that festival cash on more regular bin collection..

B) the current bins are clearly too small for demand .. can the council not afford new bigger ones ?

C) why do people continue to put rubbish into a full bin or top or worse around ?

D) why are dog owners incapable of taking dog poo home rather than discard on top a full bin ? ( I do admit more dog poo bins are clearly needed but why not take home or to another bin if the current one is full ??)

Lambeth have been neglecting the common for years …
Write to them and complain. Funding is an issue naturally, but I can’t help to think the common is neglected as mainly surrounded by Wandsworth.
It’s a useful cash cow for them, but they don’t put it back into the common.

The pond area is a disgrace, broken fences and jetties.

They have recently replaced broken benches, but I did sent them emails of our local and only bench falling apart for 2-3 yrs.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil, so write to them !

Most parks and open spaces have a Friends of ... group as a way of liaising with their local council. There is a Friends of Clapham Common organisation  https://claphamcommon.net
It is 'a community and environmental group of over 500 members working to improve and protect Clapham Common'.
Bins are a tricky issue as obviously the provision and emptying of them cost cash strapped councils money.  There is also a line of thinking that the more bins you provide the more they will need emptying and that people should reduce the waste they put in public bins by taking it home with them and putting it in the relevant bin at home to recycle.  Tricky to argue in the case of dog waste but maybe you could ask the Friends group to lobby for dog waste bins or signage? Thank you for taking an interest and sparking the debate.

The bins yes are often full especially after a weekend, and my bug bear is the area we are near Common is a magnet for casual littering workies from their cars and vans, and others including parents leaving the playground kids dropping from buggies - a discarded banana skin, crisp packets, plastic bottles, even a half drunk pint of milk left open on our wall as family drove off in a large four-wheel drive. 😐

People using the free 1h parking slots drop lunch refuse v often.
I complained to council after getting fed up with moving unsightly bits and they put some stop littering signs and so did I.
Next i will petition for the free parking space to be removed and a candid camera put up!

Lambeth Council are indeed incompetent in my view!
They seem to find the money though to install very ugly wooden boxes filled with nondescript plants that won’t be looked after just to stop people driving up a road or parking a car!
As they’ve done in West Dulwich by our salon and around Streatham- They couldn’t care less about small businesses or public park places like Clapham common! They are a disgrace!! Rant over!!!
