Emanuel School in Battersea, south-west London, is a well-respected independent day school for boys and girls aged 10 to 18. As a thriving co-ed just 10-minutes from central London, it offers an ambitious and aspirational environment, with success in academics alongside sports, music and drama.
Founded in 1594 by Anne Sackville, Lady Dacre, and Queen Elizabeth I, the school has a rich history and a current enrolment of over 1,000 students including 290 in the sixth form.
The school’s architecture is a notable feature, described as one of the most striking in south-west London. The entrance, a wide bridge over a railway line, is both unique and practical, minimising car congestion. The campus blends original buildings with modern additions, creating a clean, bright and spacious environment. The Dacre family motto, ‘pour bien désirer’, is a guiding principle, reflecting the school’s community-oriented approach.
Emanuel School emphasises a holistic education, balancing academic rigour with extracurricular activities. This approach is evident in their impressive exam results: this year (2024), 69% of GCSE grades were 8-9 and 89% were 9-7, while 65% of A-level grades were A*-A and an impressive 90% achieved A*-B. The school is in the top 10 of fully co-ed day schools, but academic achievement is only part of their success. Emanuel has also received awards for performing arts and community outreach, including the ‘Primary Ambitions’ programme which supported local pupils during the pandemic. In 2022, the school won the National Independent Schools’ Award for Performing Arts.
The vision of the school is for Emanuel pupils to be happy, confident and kind, and to demonstrate high aspirations in all they do
Sports play a significant role, with coaching staff including former sports professionals, those coaching as part of professional player pathways, and those still competing at national and regional levels. The school organises over 1,000 fixtures annually, competing against local opposition and in internal matches. Sports facilities are extensive and include 26 acres of playing fields, a full-size all-weather pitch, a mini-astro, a 25m indoor swimming pool, two outdoor netball/tennis courts, 10 cricket nets, a sports hall with two fitness suites and a dance studio, a dedicated strength and conditioning gym, and a boat house located on the Thames at Barnes Bridge. The sporting programme is divided into three strands: performance, development and engagement, ensuring opportunities for all students to excel.
The vision of the school is for Emanuel pupils to be happy, confident and kind, and to demonstrate high aspirations in all they do. Pupils, parents and teachers work together in a three-way framework: teaching and learning – to ensure lessons and daily interactions are full of vitality and inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition; pastoral care – so that every child is recognised, listened to and understood within a community that values the development of spiritual and social understanding; and co-curricular and community life – so that every child enjoys being part of a larger cause, finds friendships and develops life-enhancing interests and passions.
Emanuel is very much part of its local community as evidenced through its diverse and award-winning partnership and outreach programme. The school’s aim is to foster aspiration and social mobility through education so that young people are able to make the very best of themselves and there is a significant bursary and scholarship offering.
