Holy Name Catholic Primary School in Fazakerley, Liverpool, was inspected on 28 and 29 March 2023, and received an overall effectiveness rating of good. The school is characterized by a happy and welcoming environment where pupils express their enjoyment of attending due to the friendships they have formed. The staff are trusted by the pupils to provide care and safety. The leadership team has high aspirations for all students and has developed a broad and ambitious curriculum that supports the achievement of all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as disadvantaged students.
Pupils demonstrate positive behavior and attitudes towards learning, engaging actively in their education. Instances of bullying are rare and are effectively addressed when they occur. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including after-school clubs in gymnastics, gardening, and multiskills, which enhance the pupils' learning experiences. Educational trips and visits from guest speakers further enrich the curriculum, while older pupils benefit from a residential trip to Wales that fosters team-building skills. Opportunities for leadership and responsibility are abundant, with pupils taking on roles such as school councillors and prefects.
The curriculum is well-structured in most subjects, allowing pupils to build on their prior knowledge effectively. Teachers are well-trained and possess good subject knowledge, ensuring that learning is revisited to reinforce retention. This approach helps pupils to remember and apply their knowledge effectively. However, in a small number of subjects, the curriculum organization is less effective, leading to gaps in pupils' understanding and knowledge.
Reading is prioritized, with staff receiving training to deliver the phonics program effectively. From nursery onwards, children develop their language skills, and by reception, they practice phonics regularly. Pupils read books that align with their phonics knowledge, and those who struggle receive timely support to help them improve. As a result, nearly all pupils can read accurately and fluently. The school library is well-resourced, and pupils enjoy reading both independently and as part of the curriculum.
Pupils exhibit positive attitudes towards learning, showing focus and motivation. They manage their behavior well, contributing to a calm and purposeful learning environment. The emphasis on personal development is strong, with pupils engaging in activities that promote well-being and respect for diversity. They understand the importance of treating others equally and take pride in their contributions to the local and wider community, including supporting charities.
The school effectively identifies and supports pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they have access to the curriculum. Staff feel valued and supported by leadership regarding their workload and well-being. The governing body plays an active role in supporting and challenging school leaders.
Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with staff trained to recognize and address any concerns regarding pupil well-being. The school promotes safety awareness, particularly regarding online risks. While the school excels in many areas, there is a need for improvement in the organization of learning in a minority of subjects to ensure all pupils can connect their learning effectively. Overall, Holy Name Catholic Primary School provides a supportive and enriching educational experience for its pupils.
