Ofsted conducted a short inspection of St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Manchester on 21 May 2019, following its previous judgment of good in June 2015. The inspection confirmed that the school continues to maintain a good quality of education. The leadership team has effectively upheld this standard, with high staff morale evident among those who participated in the staff questionnaire. Staff expressed pride in their association with the school, highlighting its strong leadership and management. The principal exemplifies commitment to both the school and the local community, notably through initiatives like ‘The bread and butter thing,’ which provides food parcels to families at low cost, fostering strong home-school relationships.
The school culture promotes caring, learning, and growth, aligning with its motto of striving to be the best. Pupils are well cared for and nurtured, with a focus on their academic success and well-being. Over the past two years, standards have risen, and pupil progress has significantly improved. The school environment is vibrant and welcoming, with displays celebrating pupil achievements across a well-planned curriculum.
Despite changes in staffing since the last inspection, which posed challenges to school improvement, the leadership team has become established and knowledgeable. Governors are actively involved and provide effective support and challenge. Pupil behavior is commendable, with students displaying confidence and responding positively to high expectations. They value their education and enjoy engaging lessons.
The inspection identified areas for improvement, particularly in leadership and management. Subject leaders, aside from those in English and mathematics, need to enhance their oversight of teaching and learning. Some middle leaders are new to their roles and require a clearer understanding of assessment to drive improvements in their subjects. Additionally, raising achievement in writing, especially for the most able pupils, remains a focus.
Safeguarding practices are effective, with a strong culture of safety embedded within the school ethos. Leaders are well-acquainted with the local community and understand the potential dangers pupils may face. Comprehensive training ensures that staff and governors are knowledgeable about safeguarding concerns and know how to respond appropriately. Pupils feel safe, respected, and valued, enjoying positive relationships with peers and staff.
The inspection also focused on attendance, which is being closely monitored by leaders. While attendance is improving and is now in line with national averages, persistent absenteeism remains a concern. The early years provision is strong, with children receiving a solid start to their education. Leaders have created an engaging outdoor environment that supports various learning opportunities.
The inspection highlighted the need for further development in writing for the most able boys and in mathematics for all pupils. Leaders have redesigned the mathematics curriculum to provide more challenges, and there is evidence of improved progress. However, pupils expressed a desire for even greater challenges in their mathematics learning.
In summary, St Joseph’s RC Primary School is a good school with a strong leadership team, effective safeguarding measures, and a positive learning environment. Continued focus on improving attendance, enhancing middle leadership understanding of assessment, and providing more opportunities for real-life application of skills will support the school in its ongoing development.
