Cleve House School is a co-educational independent day school located in Knowle, Bristol, catering for pupils aged between two and eleven years. Established in 1937, the school moved to its current site in 1947 and has been under the ownership of the current headteacher, Mr. Craig Wardle, since 2015. The school aims to provide a broad and exciting educational experience, encouraging pupils to explore new things and develop into kind, helpful, and considerate members of the community, fostering a love for learning.
The school has a diverse pupil population, with students coming from various backgrounds and cultures within a 15-mile radius. The school's assessment indicates that the overall ability of its pupils is average, with nine students identified as having special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), all of whom receive additional support. The curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of the most able pupils, ensuring that all students are appropriately challenged.
The regulatory compliance inspection conducted by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) revealed that Cleve House School does not meet all the required standards set forth in the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014. The inspection focused on various aspects, including the quality of education, spiritual and moral development, welfare and safety, staff suitability, premises, information provision, complaints handling, and leadership quality.
The quality of education provided at the school is generally good, with a documented curriculum that supports effective teaching and enables pupils to make good progress. However, the school uses its own framework for assessing attainment rather than the national framework, which raises concerns about consistency in measuring pupil performance. The spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils is actively promoted, with principles and values that encourage responsible citizenship.
In terms of welfare, health, and safety, the school has made arrangements for staff training in child protection and promotes good behavior while preventing bullying. However, there are shortcomings in safeguarding practices, particularly regarding adherence to current statutory guidance and health and safety requirements, including fire safety. The school has been advised to take immediate action to address these deficiencies.
The inspection also assessed the suitability of staff, confirming that appropriate checks are made to ensure that all staff members are suitable to work with children. The premises are generally adequate, providing suitable facilities for pupils' needs, although maintenance standards must be improved to meet health and safety requirements.
The school provides a range of information to parents, including details about the curriculum, admission procedures, and the complaints process. Complaints are handled effectively through a structured process, ensuring that parents' concerns are addressed appropriately.
Leadership and management at Cleve House School have been identified as areas needing improvement. The leadership team must demonstrate better skills and knowledge to ensure that all standards are consistently met and to actively promote the well-being of pupils.
The educational quality inspection highlighted that the pupils' academic achievements are good, with strong verbal and listening skills. Pupils are excellent collaborators, although there is a need for further development of higher-order thinking skills. The personal development of pupils is excellent, with high levels of self-esteem and confidence. Recommendations for improvement include enhancing the development of higher-order thinking skills and providing more opportunities for self-reflection in pupils' work.
Overall, Cleve House School provides a nurturing environment that supports the academic and personal development of its pupils. However, there are areas for improvement, particularly in regulatory compliance, safeguarding practices, and leadership effectiveness. The school is encouraged to take immediate action to address the identified deficiencies and continue fostering a positive learning environment for all its students.
