Overstone Combined School, located in Wing, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, underwent an inspection on November 8 and 9, 2022. The overall effectiveness of the school was rated as requiring improvement, alongside the quality of education, behavior and attitudes, and leadership and management. However, personal development and early years provision were rated as good. The school has experienced significant leadership changes since the last inspection, which took place in November 2019. The current headteacher has been in position since September 2020 and has worked to establish high expectations and clear routines to support learning.
Pupils generally enjoy their time at school, feeling safe and supported by caring teachers. The school offers a variety of clubs and activities, promoting personal development. Although bullying is rare, the school has measures in place to address any incidents that may arise. Despite improvements in behavior due to new strategies implemented by staff, disruptions in lessons still occur, affecting the overall learning environment. The school has made strides in improving behavior management, but challenges remain, particularly during break times when play can become overly boisterous.
The curriculum has been redeveloped under the new leadership, aiming to be ambitious and inclusive for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. However, weaknesses in the curriculum have been identified, particularly in key stages one and two, where many pupils do not achieve to their potential. Some subjects lack clarity in the knowledge that pupils are expected to retain, and inconsistencies in teachers' subject knowledge can hinder effective teaching and learning.
Reading has been prioritized, with staff trained to deliver a structured phonics curriculum. Early years pupils benefit from daily reading sessions with adults, fostering a love for reading and vocabulary development. The school’s library is well-stocked and serves as a central resource for pupils. Teachers are noted for their understanding of their pupils' needs, particularly those with SEND, and they work closely with families to provide support.
The early years curriculum is well-designed and effectively delivered, allowing children to develop language skills and an understanding of the world through engaging activities. The school promotes spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, preparing pupils for future educational steps. Staff and pupils are encouraged to demonstrate kindness and respect, contributing to a positive school culture.
Safeguarding measures are effective, with staff trained to recognize and report concerns. Leaders are proactive in supporting vulnerable pupils and families, ensuring they receive necessary assistance. The school has a clear approach to teaching pupils about online safety.
To improve, the school needs to refine its curriculum to ensure that essential knowledge is clearly defined and sequenced. Teachers require ongoing support to enhance their subject knowledge and address gaps in pupils' understanding. Consistency in behavior management strategies must be maintained to further reduce disruptions in lessons. Overall, while the school has made progress, continued efforts are needed to enhance the quality of education and ensure all pupils achieve their best.
