Davenies School, located in the heart of Beaconsfield, offers a non-selective educational environment for boys aged four to 13. With a capacity of forty places in two-form entry reception, admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. While there is no official intake into Year 3, a few places typically become available. Additionally, seven or eight boys join most years in Year 7 from local state primaries and Gayhurst School.
The school has a strong track record of preparing boys for a variety of senior schools. Of the forty boys in Year 6, around a third move on to local grammar schools or independent schools. Those who stay until 13+ head to a range of day and boarding schools, including Berkhamsted, Haileybury, St Edward’s, and Wellington. Other schools that sometimes feature include Shiplake, Merchant Taylors’, Bradfield, Strathallan, Harrow, Radley, and Marlborough College. The school also boasts a decent number of scholarships each year across various disciplines, with four awarded in 2023.
Founded in 1940 by the Petty family, the school has a rich history. The school motto, ‘singulus pro fraternitate’ (each striving for the good of all), was inspired by the Reverend Newton’s observations of his beehives during the war. The school is situated in an urban location and visitors enter through a charming Grade II listed former Georgian farmhouse. The site includes stylish and architecturally interesting modern additions, although parents and pupils often use a less aesthetically pleasing entrance via Sainsbury’s car park.
The school’s facilities are impressive, with modest playing fields supplemented by a reciprocal agreement with neighbouring St Mary’s primary, allowing the use of their fields in exchange for access to Davenies’ indoor pool. The classrooms are bright and modern, spread across different buildings to ensure the safety of younger pupils and to give older boys a sense of responsibility. The art department is particularly noteworthy, equipped with two potters’ wheels and a kiln. The school also has a multi-purpose hall for plays, concerts, and assemblies, as well as a large sports hall for indoor games and PE. A new SciTech centre is also in the pipeline.
Parents in Beaconsfield have a range of outstanding local primary schools to choose from, but Davenies stands out for its balanced approach. The school is not too big, not too macho, and not overly focused on any one destination, making it a well-rounded choice. The overall vibe is friendly and purposeful, with favourable comments about the boys’ behaviour often overheard in the local Starbucks.
Academically, the school has seen significant improvements, particularly in Maths and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). The Maths department follows a Singapore-style teaching method, and the MFL department is led by an effervescent native French speaker. History teaching is also highly regarded, and English is improving. French is taught from reception, with Spanish introduced in Year 3 and Latin in Year 6. The school adopts a ‘no pressure’ approach, but expectations build gradually. There is a major focus on reading, with an accelerated reading scheme from Year 3 and four 20-minute reading periods per week for Years 3 and 4. The school also has a strong focus on STEM and computing, with a new Head of Department driving initiatives in robotics and study skills.
The music department, while traditional, is set to see improvements with a new director and facility on the way. Drama, on the other hand, is already considered wonderful, with productions ranging from traditional Christmas nativities to major senior productions. The school also has a strong LAMDA programme.
Sporting opportunities are plentiful, with a focus on rugby, football, and cricket. The school fields teams in minor sports such as fencing, badminton, athletics, cross-country, and tennis. The extra-curricular day starts at 7.45am with a breakfast club, and older pupils can stay for clubs or prep until 6.00pm. There are up to 60 clubs on offer, including unique options like handbells, NFL, sailing, and comic book creation. The school also has its own Cubs pack.
Pastoral care is a priority, with a team comprising heads of year, SENCo, and a school sister. The school conducts an annual anonymous anti-bullying survey and has a new peer mentor programme. The top two years are split into small tutor groups, and there is a major focus on service and social responsibility.
