Maltmans Green School, located in the picturesque area of Gerrards Cross, offers a nurturing environment for girls aged two to eleven. Founded in 1918 by Beatrice Chambers, the school has a rich history of promoting a progressive curriculum that empowers young girls. The ethos of ‘girl power’ is still evident today, reflected in the school’s distinctive uniform colours of purple, green, and white, symbolising the suffrage movement.
The school primarily draws its intake from its own day-care and nursery, known as ‘Little Malties’, where children transition seamlessly into early years education. Although non-selective at this stage, prospective pupils have an informal meeting to ensure the school is the right fit. The reception classes start with two groups of 20, expanding to three classes by year three, with additional entries possible if spaces become available. For those joining the prep school, assessments in Maths, English, and team-building activities are conducted.
Maltmans Green School is renowned for its academic excellence, with approximately half of its pupils progressing to local grammar schools such as Beaconsfield High School and Dr Challoner’s High School. The remainder often move on to prestigious independent schools, including Wycombe Abbey and Cheltenham Ladies College. In 2023, the school awarded 11 scholarships, although some parents feel there could be more guidance for those pursuing this route.
The school is situated on a 12-acre site, offering substantial outdoor space and woodland areas. Facilities include two cosy libraries, an IT room, an art and design technology room, a STEAM lab, and a woodland school. The highlight is undoubtedly the six-lane, full-length indoor swimming pool, complete with tiered spectator seating, which is a significant draw for many parents.
The day-care and nursery benefit from dedicated teaching spaces and are integrated into the school community. Specialist teaching in music, French, and PE is provided even at this young age, with weekly swimming lessons from the start. The school offers wraparound care from 7.30 am to 6 pm for 49 weeks of the year, catering for working parents. While the nursery and pre-prep playground is due for refurbishment, plans for a new climbing frame and mud kitchen are underway.
Academically, the school achieves stellar results, with a high qualification rate in the Bucks 11+ transfer test. Recent additions to the timetable, such as verbal and non-verbal reasoning from year four and current affairs and interview skills in year six, have sharpened the focus on the 11+. Specialist teaching is provided in all subjects from year four, with English, PE, and Art being particularly popular among pupils. The STEAM lab is a favourite, with projects like making dresses from recycled materials highlighting the school’s commitment to sustainability.
The school offers over 100 clubs and activities each week, ensuring pupils develop a range of skills beyond academia. Music and drama are well-represented, with several choirs and the ‘Maltman’s Belles’ hand-bell group. The Lapraik Hall hosts music and drama performances, as well as gymnastics and dance shows. The school encourages public speaking and performance, helping even the shyest pupils gain confidence.
Pastoral care is a priority, with a focus on resolving issues independently where possible. The school promotes wellbeing through initiatives like mindfulness ambassadors and wellbeing warriors. A dedicated learning space supports pupils with special educational needs, with clear plans and regular communication with parents.
The school reflects the demographic of the local area, with a mix of ethnicities and an increasing number of dual-income families. While the parent social scene may not be as vibrant as some might hope, the school remains committed to fostering a strong work ethic and preparing its pupils for the challenges of senior school and beyond.
