St John's International School is an independent day and boarding institution located in Sidmouth, Devon, catering for students aged two to sixteen. Owned by International Education Systems Ltd, the school has undergone significant changes since its last inspection, including the appointment of a new chair of governors and a new headteacher in January 2018. The school comprises an Early Years Foundation Stage for Reception class children, a junior school for Years 1 to 6, and a senior school for Years 7 to 16. It features a single boarding house with separate accommodations for boys and girls.
The school aims to cultivate future leaders who are collaborative, communicative, inquisitive, respectful, and creative, fostering a passion for lifelong learning. The student body primarily consists of day pupils from professional and business families in East Devon, while boarding pupils often come from other IES schools worldwide. Nationally standardized test data indicates that the pupils' abilities are above average, and the school provides support for students with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as those for whom English is an additional language.
The regulatory compliance inspection conducted by the Independent Schools Inspectorate revealed that the school meets almost all required standards set forth in the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014 and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools 2015. However, it was noted that the school must take immediate action to address certain deficiencies. The quality of education provided is generally good, with the curriculum documented and supported by appropriate plans and schemes of work. The teaching enables pupils to make good progress, and the standards relating to the quality of education are met.
In terms of spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, the school actively promotes principles and values that help pupils become responsible and tolerant citizens. The views of boarders are encouraged and considered by staff, and the prefect system is managed appropriately. The welfare, health, and safety of pupils are prioritized, with good behavior promoted and bullying effectively prevented. However, the school must ensure that checks against the barred list and other relevant prohibitions are conducted before personnel take up their positions.
The school has established appropriate checks to ensure the suitability of staff and maintains a register as required. The premises and accommodation meet the necessary standards, providing suitable facilities for pupils' medical and therapy needs. A range of information is published and made available to parents, including details about the school's ethos, curriculum, and arrangements for admission and behavior. Complaints are handled effectively through a structured process, and the leadership and management of the school ensure that required policies and records are maintained.
The educational quality inspection highlighted that the quality of pupils' academic achievements is good, with well-developed speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning and collaborate effectively. However, some of the most able pupils in the senior school do not achieve their full potential. The school is advised to strengthen pupils' ICT skills and raise the attainment of the most able students through higher levels of challenge.
Pupils' personal development is excellent, with strong self-confidence, social skills, and a deep sense of right and wrong. They contribute positively to their communities and demonstrate tolerance and respect for diverse backgrounds. The school fosters a strong sense of global citizenship, with pupils forming close friendships with peers from various cultures. The leadership and management of the school promote an ethos where pupils' views are valued, and they actively engage in decision-making processes.
Overall, St John's International School provides a supportive and enriching environment for its pupils, promoting both academic success and personal growth. The school is committed to continuous improvement and addressing the areas identified for development to ensure that all pupils can thrive and achieve their full potential.
