Holmwood House School, located in a semi-rural area of north Essex, offers a comprehensive educational experience for children from six months to 16 years old. The school operates a nursery on a separate site for the youngest children, who can then transition smoothly to pre-reception or reception at the Lexden site. While some children move on to local primaries, the majority join reception at age four. The school has been expanding since 2021, with the first Year 9 cohort starting in 2023.
The admissions policy is non-selective for younger years, with no formal tests at reception. However, entry at age 11 is through the school’s own tests. Spaces are generally available in the higher forms, and numbers in Years 7 and 8 remain strong.
Holmwood House School prepares pupils for grammar schools, with around half of the students moving on after Year 6 to institutions like Colchester Royal Grammar and Colchester County High School for Girls. Those who stay until Year 8 often proceed to nearby day and boarding schools such as Royal Hospital School and Felsted. With the recent addition of GCSEs, the school anticipates a shift in exit patterns. In 2022, the school awarded 14 scholarships at 11+ and 35 at 13+.
Set in extensive wooded grounds, the school offers a blend of day and boarding options. The main building, used for administration, boarding, and meals, is surrounded by functional two-storey buildings, courtyards, and play areas. The natural surroundings are well-utilised, with forest trails, outdoor classrooms, games pitches, and running tracks. The prep school features its own adventure trail and an outdoor learning space called the Spinney.
The school day starts at 8.25 am, with a breakfast club available from 7.30 am. Teaching continues until 3.25 pm or 4 pm for all years. Pre-prep and Years 4 to 6 can either go home or stay for tea, prep, and activities until 6.15 pm, a popular option for many. For Years 7 and 8, the later time is compulsory. Saturday morning school has been discontinued.
The school operates a house system named after the elements, with various challenges and competitions throughout the year. Behaviour is noted to be very good, with pupils displaying well-mannered conduct in a relaxed, unforced way.
Reception pupils enjoy the newest premises, which are close to but separate from the main building. The pre-prep department occupies a modern two-storey building with light, airy classrooms and a decent-sized hall. French is taught from nursery, and interactive, often messy learning is encouraged to engage children from the start.
In the prep school, Spanish is added in Year 4, and there is setting in Maths and English from Year 6. The Spark programme for Years 7 and 8 focuses on critical thinking and analysis. Global Studies, an amalgam of History, Geography, and Religious Studies, is particularly popular. Support for SEN is a combination of classroom-based and one-to-one sessions, with the Head of Learning Support continually developing innovative methods to help students overcome learning barriers.
Sport is a significant part of the curriculum, with rugby, football, hockey, and cricket for boys, and hockey, netball, and cricket for girls. The school boasts 20 acres of sports grounds, a vast sports hall, and an indoor swimming pool. The on-site Lexden rackets club provides tennis and squash coaching.
Drama is a timetabled subject, with several productions staged annually. Music is also taken seriously, with opportunities for all students to learn a stringed instrument and participate in choirs and orchestras. The art room is a highlight, offering a spacious, well-lit environment for creativity, complete with a kiln and DT area.
The library is extensive, with thousands of books and a balcony that seats at least 60. It is well-used for supervised prep and library lessons. The Jubilee Hall, used for daily assemblies and school plays, has tiered seating for 200 and an exhibition space.
Boarding is available from Year 4, with a maximum of two nights a week. Special themed nights are particularly popular, especially with Years 7 and 8. Boarders have access to a games room, sports hall, and art and music facilities.
