Ofsted conducted a short inspection of Bapchild and Tonge Church of England Primary School on 17 July 2019, following its previous judgment of good in May 2015. The inspection confirmed that the school continues to maintain its good quality of education. The leadership team, under Mr. Christian Kelly, has effectively upheld the standards set during the last inspection. Since his appointment, Mr. Kelly has established a strong senior leadership team that shares a clear vision and commitment to providing the best for the pupils. The leadership has gained the confidence of parents and carers, with many expressing satisfaction with the improvements made under the new management.
Staff morale is high, with teachers feeling proud to work at the school. They appreciate the management's consideration of their well-being and workload, which is well managed. The school promotes the achievement of every pupil within a caring community grounded in Christian values. A strong sense of community is evident, providing support for pupils, families, and staff. Personal skills such as resilience, self-discipline, and communication are actively encouraged, preparing pupils for life beyond school alongside their academic achievements.
The leadership has built upon the strengths identified in the previous inspection and has addressed areas for improvement. Notably, pupils' progress in writing has improved, and early years provision has been a key focus with successful outcomes. High expectations have led to significant advancements in subjects beyond English and mathematics, although some foundation subjects still require further development. Leadership in core subjects is effective, with actions based on thorough analysis of outcomes leading to improvements. The evaluation of teaching quality is robust, and any identified weaknesses are promptly addressed with support and expected improvement.
Pupils achieve well, with work in their books demonstrating good progress, including for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs. Attainment in grammar, punctuation, and spelling has notably improved, as has overall attainment in reading, writing, and mathematics. The governing body, although relatively new, is actively working to enhance its effectiveness in holding leaders accountable for the school's performance. Clear responsibilities have been established to align with school development planning.
Pupils exhibit confidence, politeness, and articulate communication. They are friendly and caring, demonstrating enthusiasm for learning. Their behavior is commendable, both during lessons and throughout the school day. The school environment is welcoming and attractive, with interactive displays that reflect a broad curriculum. Parents express positive sentiments about the school and the education their children receive, with many noting the school's involvement in activities that engage families.
Safeguarding measures are effective, with a clear culture of safety embedded within the school. Leaders ensure that safeguarding arrangements are fit for purpose, maintaining meticulous records and conducting thorough recruitment checks. Staff are regularly trained and aware of their responsibilities in keeping children safe. Risk assessments are conducted for school activities, ensuring a safe environment for all.
The inspection focused on key areas, including pupils' progress in writing and overall achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics. By the end of Year 6 in 2018, pupils made significant progress in writing, attributed to strong leadership and effective actions taken to enhance teaching practices. The curriculum is broad and balanced, designed to motivate and inspire pupils while meeting their needs. Leaders acknowledge the need for further development in some foundation subjects.
Recent changes in early years provision have been significant, with a new teacher appointed to strengthen the area. Leaders have implemented extensive training and support to improve outcomes. The learning environment is well-resourced, and children demonstrate engagement and independence in their activities. Future plans include further development of outdoor provision to enhance learning opportunities.
