The school’s history dates back to 1872 when it was founded in New Cross before relocating to its current site in 1925. The main building, a red-brick Victorian Gothic structure, exudes charm with its panelling, stained glass, and turret. Situated within 100 acres of countryside, the school offers stunning views over the Weald of Kent, providing an idyllic setting for education.
The pre-prep section was established in the 1980s and features a purpose-built block with modern amenities such as a living green roof and ground source heat pump. The classrooms are designed to bring the outdoors inside, creating a harmonious learning environment. Specialist teachers from the prep school visit regularly, ensuring continuity in subjects like French, Music, and Physical Education.
The school’s emphasis on growth mindset encourages students to learn from their mistakes and develop resilience. This approach is evident in various activities across year groups, such as Year 3 science lessons exploring magnets or French classes filled with singing and repetition. The ICT department, known as the Turing Suite, equips students with essential digital skills like website building and spreadsheet management.
Class sizes are kept small, with a maximum of 18 students per class in both prep and pre-prep sections. Maths is set from Year 3 onwards while other subjects remain mixed ability until Year 5. Latin is introduced in Year 6 alongside a growing Mandarin club.
St Michael’s has moved away from traditional Common Entrance exams at 13+, opting instead for the St Michael’s Diploma which assesses critical thinking, collaboration, perseverance, and commitment alongside academic excellence. This approach reduces stress while preparing students for senior schools.
The school’s commitment to environmental responsibility is evident through initiatives led by the Environmental and Sustainability Lead. Lessons incorporate environmental awareness into subjects like Geography and Science.
