Tudor Hall School, located at the heart of Banbury, is a distinguished girls-only secondary school with a Church of England affiliation. The school caters to young women aged 11 to 18, offering both day and full boarding options. With a vibrant community and a strong emphasis on individuality, Tudor Hall is unique in many ways. It is a small yet dynamic institution that consistently delivers excellent academic results. The school’s success is attributed not only to the academic abilities of its students but also to their personal strengths, creating a diverse community where each member is celebrated for her individuality.
Under the leadership of Headmistress Julie Lodrick since 2022, Tudor Hall has continued to thrive. Lodrick’s background in music and educational leadership, combined with her personal experience in boarding schools, has equipped her with the skills to foster a nurturing environment. Her commitment to girls’ education and boarding life is evident in her approach to leadership, which emphasises empathy, freedom, and high aspirations for all students.
The school’s admissions process values more than just academic ability; it considers other personal strengths, ensuring that students are compatible with the school’s academic pace. This holistic approach allows Tudor Hall to cultivate future female leaders who are ambitious and determined to make the most of their opportunities. The school’s academic achievements are impressive, with 54% of GCSE grades being 9-7 and 30% of A-levels achieving A*/A (70% A*-B) in 2024. Most graduates progress to Russell Group universities, with popular choices including Bristol, Durham, and Edinburgh.
Tudor Hall’s teaching and learning environment is described as inspirational by many parents. The school maintains excellent communication with parents through weekly meetings and reports. Students are encouraged to take risks, develop a growth mindset, and aim high. As one of fewer than 15 independent schools in the UK working towards World Class School accreditation based on cognitive and neuroscience research, Tudor Hall demonstrates its commitment to academic excellence.
The school offers a broad range of subjects for its size, particularly at GCSE level with 27 subjects available. Both humanities and sciences are highly regarded, with impressive science facilities including five modern labs. Vocational courses such as BTEC Sport and Cambridge Technical Level 3 Business are also offered. The arts are well-supported at Tudor Hall, with exceptional facilities in the Griffiths Centre for art, ceramics, textiles, and cookery.
Extracurricular activities are abundant at Tudor Hall. Students can participate in clubs like Glitter Bombs science club or Hester’s Cookery Club. The school’s Tudor in three continents programme encourages global citizenship through projects in India and South Africa. Local charity work is also well-supported. The drama department is thriving, offering GCSE and A-level Drama with stellar results. Recent productions include The Tempest and Frozen, showcasing the students’ love for performing.
Sports play an integral role at Tudor Hall, with facilities including tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, sports hall, gym, hockey and lacrosse pitches, and a fitness centre. While the school holds its own on the match circuit, those interested in higher-level competitive sports can access local clubs in Banbury.
Boarding at Tudor Hall is very much full-time, with two exeats per term and no flexi or weekly boarding options. Boarding houses are divided by year group with day girls joining according to age. The pastoral care system ensures that each student receives individual attention tailored to her needs.
Tudor Hall’s ethos is deeply rooted in its Christian values and heritage as one of England’s oldest girls’ boarding schools. Founded in 1850 by Rev TW Todd and his wife, the school moved to its current location at Wykham Park in 1946. The picturesque setting just outside Banbury offers a serene environment conducive to learning.
Family traditions are important at Tudor Hall; lifelong friendships are formed here under the school motto Habeo ut dem (I have that I may give). Charitable giving is fundamental to the school’s ethos; pupils engage actively with local charities while maintaining strong connections with alumnae who offer support through talks about their lives and careers.
Parents appreciate being welcomed into the school community; they enjoy meeting each other at events such as lunches or careers fairs where first names are used when addressing them—an indication of how close-knit this community truly is.
Tudor Hall has earned its reputation for producing considerate young women who possess strong work ethics alongside tenacity—a testament not only from parents but also from observing students themselves: animated individuals comfortable within their own skins without excessive makeup or pretension.
