Ofsted conducted a short inspection of Burstow Primary School on 2 July 2019, marking the first inspection since the school was rated as good in June 2015. The findings indicate that the school continues to maintain a good standard of education. The leadership team, under the guidance of Headteacher Miss Claire Hodgson, has demonstrated effective leadership characterized by clarity of vision, determination, and a positive atmosphere. Since her appointment in January 2017, notable improvements in teaching and learning have been achieved, fostering an environment where all pupils are valued and encouraged to excel.
The quality of teaching has significantly improved over the past 18 months, leading to better pupil outcomes in English, mathematics, and science. The Year 1 phonics screening check results exceeded the national average in 2018, and key stage 1 outcomes in reading, writing, and mathematics were also positive. However, there was disappointment regarding key stage 2 outcomes in reading and mathematics, which fell below the national average in 2018. The leadership team has since focused on addressing these gaps, and pupils are making rapid progress in their learning.
Despite some staff changes that have posed challenges, particularly in key stage 2, the teaching of writing has improved, and a consistent approach to writing skills is now in place. The proportion of children achieving a good level of development in the early years has increased significantly, surpassing the national average. Parents express high satisfaction with their children's experiences in Reception Year, highlighting the stimulating activities provided.
Pupils enjoy school and exhibit good behavior, engaging positively in lessons and during playtime. The excitement during the inspection was evident as pupils prepared for their new classrooms. Parents have confidence in the school, appreciating the genuine interest shown by staff in their children's learning. However, some parents have expressed a desire for improved communication between the school and home, an area the leadership is keen to enhance.
Safeguarding measures are effective, with clear expectations and established procedures ensuring pupil safety. The school environment is well-maintained, contributing to a secure learning atmosphere. The leadership team actively monitors safeguarding arrangements and maintains good relationships with external agencies.
The inspection focused on the improvements in mathematics teaching, support for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs, and attendance rates. Leaders have made effective strides in enhancing mathematics instruction, particularly in early years and key stage 1, resulting in improved pupil understanding. However, further work is needed to fully establish these improvements in key stage 2.
Efforts to support disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs have been strengthened, with additional specialist services being utilized to identify and assist these pupils more effectively. Attendance rates have improved, though disadvantaged pupils still attend less frequently than their peers. The school continues to work with families to promote regular attendance.
In summary, Burstow Primary School has made significant progress under its leadership, with improvements in teaching quality and pupil outcomes. The school is committed to addressing remaining challenges, particularly in mathematics and attendance, while fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for all pupils.
