Danes Hill Preparatory School, located in the area of Leatherhead, is a co-educational independent school that caters to boys and girls aged three to 13. With a student body of 686, the school is one of the largest preparatory schools in the UK, operating from an impressive 55-acre campus on the edge of Oxshott village. The school’s non-denominational approach ensures inclusivity for children from all faiths and backgrounds.
The school offers a broad and diverse curriculum, supported by outstanding pastoral care and extensive extra-curricular opportunities. The emphasis on individual recognition and encouragement to develop talents is evident in the school’s approach to education. With strengths in Sport, Music, Drama, and Art, Danes Hill provides a well-rounded education that fosters self-confidence and a zest for learning.
Modern language teaching is a highlight at Danes Hill, with French taught throughout the school and Spanish introduced from Year 4. Year 8 students are encouraged to sit a GCSE in a Modern Foreign Language, with candidates achieving top grades. This focus on languages reflects the school’s commitment to providing students with a global perspective.
The school’s facilities are impressive, with state-of-the-art sporting amenities, music rooms, and teaching spaces. The sports programme is extensive, offering at least 20 different sports. The pitches are vast, and there is even an AstroTurf pitch, which is rare for a junior school. The new sports hall adds to the already impressive roster of facilities. While some parents have noted that certain students frequently make the A/B teams, the school offers A-F squads from Year 2 onwards, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to participate.
Music is another area where Danes Hill excels. With over 300 pupils learning instruments and 13 ensembles available, students are encouraged to explore their musical talents. The music department is vibrant, with bassoon practice heard during our visit. However, some students expressed a desire for more modern music options.
Drama plays a significant role in the school’s curriculum, with each year group putting on an annual performance. The art studios are spacious and showcase a range of talents across various genres. The school’s commitment to nurturing creativity is evident in these departments.
Inclusivity for mild to moderate Special Educational Needs (SEN) receives positive feedback from parents. A well-staffed team supports around 90 children who receive extra help either in or outside the classroom. The site is wheelchair accessible, demonstrating the school’s commitment to inclusivity.
The school’s house system fosters a sense of togetherness among students, while the school council actively petitions for changes. The recent addition of a Year 8 common room highlights the school’s responsiveness to student needs.
The dining hall is vast, with mixed reviews on the food quality. However, we enjoyed delicious salads during our visit and noted mostly spotless plates among lasagne eaters. The library is a stunning space located at the heart of the school, complete with comfy beanbags and a book-themed mural.
Danes Hill’s academic achievements are noteworthy, with students gaining entry into prestigious secondary schools such as Epsom College, St John’s Leatherhead, Reigate Grammar School, Charterhouse, Cranleigh, Wellington College, RGS Guildford, and Brighton College. In 2024 alone, 53 scholarships were awarded to students.
The school is popular but not currently oversubscribed. Some year groups have waiting lists in place due to high demand. Entrance assessments include taster days for children entering Year 1 and above and a 30-minute English and Maths assessment for Year 2 and above.
Under interim head Richard Brown MA since 2024, Danes Hill continues to thrive under experienced leadership. From April 2025, Colin Baty BEd NPQH will take over as headmaster after serving as head of Bedales Prep since 2017.
In conclusion, Danes Hill Preparatory School offers an exceptional educational experience within its well-maintained campus. Its focus on individual development through diverse opportunities makes it an attractive choice for families seeking a comprehensive education for their children.
