This is evident from the informal meetings with the head, which often include a review of the child’s last three terms’ school reports. From Year 3, some pupils also take an English and Maths test. Taster days are available for both pre-prep and prep, allowing prospective students to experience the school environment first-hand.
The school has a strong track record of preparing pupils for notable public schools, including St Edward’s Oxford, Harrow, King’s School Canterbury, Bryanston, Eton, Millfield, Sherborne, Charterhouse, Worth, Eastbourne, Queen Anne’s, Whitgift, Bedales, Marlborough, Oundle, and Rugby. The head places great emphasis on developing each pupil as an individual before helping them find the best next school for their potential. In 2023, five scholarships were awarded, highlighting the school’s commitment to academic excellence.
Upon arrival, the impressive driveway winds past trees, hedges, flowers, lawns, and even a golf course. The stately appearance of the school is complemented by the carved stone creatures surrounding the front door, creating a magical atmosphere. Inside, the large hall, dominated by a fireplace and wood-carved gallery, was bustling with pre-prep pupils rehearsing for the school’s nativity play during our visit. The homely feel is further enhanced by wellies lining the wall near the back door and a dog napping in a classroom corner while pupils sang carols in Latin.
The grounds are a standout feature, with expansive green spaces, sports pitches, and trails leading into the forest. The school lake, well-stocked with fish, hosts summer activities such as boating and paddleboarding. Pupils enjoy climbing in ‘the monkeys’, an overgrown combination of rhododendron and tree limbs perfect for adventurous play. The school farm, the Croft, is another popular feature, with pupils actively involved in caring for pigs, chickens, and ducks.
Even the youngest pupils have extensive room to roam, with full access to the visible field area in fine weather. Despite the chilly winter day of our visit, pupils were outside in their waterproofs, while teachers kept watch in woolly layers. The unique outdoor environment is a significant draw for many parents, who appreciate the balance of risk and freedom it offers. Mobile phones are strictly off-limits, encouraging children to engage fully with their surroundings.
Academically, the school maintains a focused and brisk learning environment, supported by small class sizes averaging 14 pupils. The school is not a hothouse, particularly when compared to London preps, and parents appreciate the more rounded approach to education. Setting is only in English, with French taught to all pupils. Year 7 students enjoy a residential trip to France, and other languages offered include German, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, and Turkish. Specialist teachers are available for pupils who wish to extend their language learning.
Learning support is provided to 20 per cent of pupils, primarily for dyslexia. The department is visible, open, and welcoming, with pupils encouraged to see it as a ‘cool place to go’. Music is highly valued, with the head occasionally playing his guitar alongside students. Instrument lessons are popular, and there are three choirs, orchestras, and smaller chamber groups. Drama is a popular subject despite limited space, and the extensive art studios offer various creative outlets.
Pupils are polite, inquisitive, and confident, eager to share their opinions. Some expressed a desire for expanded sports facilities, particularly a new Astro pitch, and more fiction books in the library. The school’s small size is both an asset and a drawback, depending on perspective. Some parents appreciate the close-knit environment, while others feel it limits social options.
The school is privately owned, with a board of governors led by the head’s mother. Some parents expressed concerns about the board’s composition, though the school insists all governors are well qualified. Parents appreciate the school’s responsiveness to concerns, with issues often resolved quickly.
Daily chapel is compulsory, drawing broadly on Christian values while covering diverse beliefs. The pre-prep has its own annexe, providing a bright and colourful learning environment. Transition into prep is now smoother, with blending activities helping pupils acclimatise.
The school embraces comparisons to Hogwarts, hosting events like a Quidditch festival. Sports offered include cricket, football, hockey, and netball, as well as shooting and paddleboarding. Facilities include an indoor pool, with all children learning to swim to a high standard. Teachers double as sports coaches, well qualified in both areas.
Pastoral support is praised, with accessible teachers and a supportive environment. The school encourages pupils to feel comfortable with all staff, ensuring they always have someone to turn to.
Boarding is a significant aspect, with a clear expectation for prep pupils to board as fully as possible. Saturdays are busy with lessons and sports, while Sundays often feature optional outings. Dorms are well-received, with ongoing renovations to improve facilities.

However, the inspection noted that progress in the prep section could be improved by ensuring consistent implementation of the school’s assessment policy. Pupils’ competence in information and communication technology (ICT) is underdeveloped, as its use as a learning aid is limited. Recommendations for improvement include enhancing pupil progress through consistent assessment practices, broadening learning opportunities for older pupils, and increasing the use of ICT across the curriculum.
The quality of pupils’ personal development is excellent, with a strong culture of praise and encouragement fostering self-confidence and self-esteem. Pupils feel safe and understand the importance of kindness and support within the school community. The diverse school environment enhances pupils’ understanding of their place in the world, and they develop excellent social skills from a young age.
