The Prebendal School

The Prebendal School, an independent co-educational day and boarding institution located in Chichester, has a rich history dating back to the 11th century. It serves as the chorister school for Chichester Cathedral and is governed by a board of governors. The school comprises three sections: a nursery for children aged three to four, a pre-preparatory department for pupils in Reception to Year 2, and a preparatory department for Years 3 to 8. The inspection confirmed that the school meets the standards set out in the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014, the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools 2022, and relevant requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework. No further action is required following this inspection.

The school ensures the suitability of staff, supply staff, and proprietors through appropriate checks, maintaining a register as required. Visitors to boarding accommodation are supervised, and guardianship arrangements are managed effectively. The premises and accommodation meet health and safety standards, providing suitable facilities for pupils’ needs, including adequate outdoor space for physical education and play.

The school effectively handles parental complaints through a structured process, ensuring clear communication and record-keeping.

Pupils’ knowledge and understanding are well-developed for their age, with choristers demonstrating exceptional singing abilities.

The personal development of pupils is also excellent. They display outstanding spiritual and moral awareness, appreciate diversity, and possess strong social skills. Pupils collaborate effectively, demonstrating self-confidence and awareness. Recommendations for improvement include enhancing pupils’ learning by consistently engaging them in their education and developing skills in coding, programming, and computer animation.

Pupils’ academic achievements are outstanding, with strong performance across subjects. The school’s assessment data shows that all groups of pupils, including those with special educational needs and the most able, make strong progress. The quality of work and progress in pupils’ books and lessons supports this data. Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage make rapid progress and achieve age-related expectations.
