North East Surrey College of Technology, known as Nescot, is a medium-sized general further education college located in Epsom, Surrey. The college offers a diverse range of vocational and higher education courses, along with apprenticeships. Following its last full inspection in September 2010, which rated it as good, a subsequent short inspection in January 2016 reaffirmed this assessment. During the recent inspection from January 24 to 27, 2023, Nescot maintained its good rating across all key areas, including the quality of education, behavior and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, education programs for young people, adult learning programs, apprenticeships, and provision for learners with high needs.
At the time of the inspection, Nescot had over two thousand students aged 16 to 18 enrolled in education programs, along with nearly nine hundred adult learners and over six hundred apprentices. The college also catered to around one hundred eighty students with high needs. The inspection highlighted that students and apprentices, including those with high needs, are generally satisfied with their courses and are motivated to succeed. They benefit from supportive relationships with staff and peers, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Most students quickly develop relevant skills and effectively apply their theoretical knowledge in practical settings.
However, the inspection noted that attendance in some areas was insufficient, impacting the skill and knowledge development of those who did not attend regularly. Despite this, the majority of students engage in activities that enhance their understanding of modern British life, such as learning about the impact of crime on society and the importance of trust in public service roles. The college provides a variety of additional activities, including guest speakers from diverse backgrounds, which enrich the students' educational experience.
Nescot's leadership collaborates effectively with local stakeholders to address skills needs in the community. They have played a significant role in developing a local skills improvement plan and have partnered with employers to create courses that align with workforce requirements. The college is also working with other educational institutions to establish the Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology, which will offer a degree in digital skills, filling a gap in the local education landscape.
The inspection team found that leaders and managers have structured courses logically, allowing students to build their knowledge progressively. Teachers employ effective teaching methods that reinforce learning, and assessment practices are in place to monitor student progress closely. However, some teachers need to improve their questioning techniques and target setting to ensure all students understand how to enhance their work.
While the college meets statutory requirements for safeguarding, there is a recognition that the curriculum for relationships, sex, and health education for younger students needs further development. Leaders are actively addressing this issue. Overall, the college has demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement, with well-qualified staff supporting students effectively, particularly those with high needs, ensuring they progress confidently to their next educational or employment opportunities. The inspection concluded that Nescot is a good provider, with areas identified for further enhancement to ensure all students achieve their full potential.
