Royal Cross Primary School, with its small cohort of 24 pupils aged between 2-11, provides a nurturing environment for young learners. The school’s academic performance, however, is concerning as reading, writing, and maths progress measures all recorded at 0, with a significant proportion of students unable to access the tests. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the teaching methods and support for students with Special Educational Needs.
On a positive note, Royal Cross Primary School excels in pastoral care, ensuring the well-being of all students. The school offers a range of extra-curricular activities to enrich the students’ learning experience, although more focus on academic improvement is needed.
Despite the academic challenges, the atmosphere at Royal Cross Primary School is warm and inclusive, fostering a sense of community among students and staff. The school is dedicated to providing a supportive and safe environment for all faiths.
In conclusion, Royal Cross Primary School has room for improvement in terms of academic performance, but its commitment to well-being and inclusive atmosphere are commendable. Parents considering the school should attend forthcoming open days to gain a first-hand experience of the school’s ethos and values.
Ofsted conducted a short inspection of Royal Cross Primary School on 18 June 2019, following its previous outstanding judgment in March 2015. The inspection confirmed that the school continues to provide an outstanding quality of education. The leadership team has effectively maintained this high standard despite recent changes in governance. The school environment is calm and supportive, allowing pupils to thrive and develop essential skills such as self-esteem, resilience, and independence. Transition arrangements to secondary education are robust, and staff morale is high, with positive feedback regarding workload considerations from governors.
One area identified for improvement in the last inspection has now become a strength. Leaders have successfully implemented workshops for parents and carers, equipping them with the skills to support their children's reading and communication development. Parents appreciate the school's proactive communication regarding their children's progress through an established messaging system. The early years provision remains outstanding, with children entering the program at developmental levels below age expectations but making significant progress, particularly in communication skills.
The curriculum is diverse and enriching, offering music, drama, swimming, and educational trips. It is tailored to meet the needs of pupils who are deaf and those with additional complex needs, enhancing their vocabulary and communication skills. The curriculum emphasizes reading and writing across various subjects, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their abilities, receive appropriate support. Attendance has improved year on year, with a notable reduction in persistent absence, partly due to fewer families taking holidays during term time. Pupils exhibit good behavior and demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning.
Safeguarding measures are effective, with a strong culture prioritizing the safety of all pupils. Leaders and governors ensure compliance with statutory requirements, and staff receive regular training. The school maintains effective partnerships with external agencies to support vulnerable pupils and their families. Safeguarding education is integrated into the IT curriculum, teaching pupils how to stay safe online. The school premises are secure, with appropriate visitor procedures in place.
The inspection highlighted the welcoming atmosphere created by leaders and staff, who work collaboratively to meet the individual needs of pupils. The quality of education, particularly for those with special educational needs, is commendable, although the designated SENCo has not yet completed the national training qualification. Classroom displays celebrate pupil achievements, fostering confidence and eagerness to learn. Engaging teaching methods maintain pupil interest, and most pupils demonstrate resilience and determination in their learning.
While the majority of pupils make good progress, some do not reach their full potential, particularly in presentation and independent writing skills. The school is encouraged to provide more challenges in English and mathematics lessons and to enhance opportunities for independent writing and problem-solving in mathematics. The designated SENCo is advised to pursue national training to further develop their expertise. Overall, the inspection reaffirmed the school's outstanding status, with clear recommendations for continued improvement to ensure all pupils achieve their best.
