Skinners’ Academy, located in Woodberry Grove, London, was inspected on 11 and 12 May 2022. The overall effectiveness of the school was rated as good, with consistent ratings of good across various categories including the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and sixth-form provision. The school has maintained its previous inspection grade of good since the last evaluation in March 2017.
Pupils at Skinners’ Academy are welcomed by staff each morning, creating a positive atmosphere where students feel happy, safe, and ready to learn. The school promotes high expectations for student achievement, and pupils engage with a broad curriculum that supports their academic success. Students take pride in their work, and this is particularly evident among sixth-form students, who demonstrate focus and maturity in their studies. Most sixth-formers continue their education at university, while those opting for apprenticeships receive adequate support in their applications.
Behaviour within the school is generally calm, supported by a clear behaviour management system introduced by the leaders. While most behaviour issues are addressed effectively, there are instances of inconsistent application of the system, leading to perceptions of unfairness among some pupils. Bullying is infrequent and managed appropriately by staff. The sixth-form student leadership team plays an active role in supporting younger pupils, and the school has resumed extracurricular activities and outings following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The school has made significant strides in developing an ambitious curriculum. Pupils in Years 7 to 9 now study all subjects of the national curriculum for three years, while those in Years 12 and 13 can choose from a variety of A-level and vocational qualifications. Leaders have carefully considered the essential knowledge that pupils need to acquire and have structured the curriculum to build on prior learning. For instance, in design and technology, Year 8 pupils learn sewing techniques before applying them in practical projects.
Teachers possess strong subject knowledge and provide clear explanations of concepts. However, there is a noted lack of routine checks on pupil understanding during lessons, which can hinder the identification of those needing additional support. The school has implemented a whole-school approach to improving reading, particularly for weaker readers, and supports early-stage readers through phonics.
Leaders maintain high expectations for pupil behaviour and attendance, with a focus on improving punctuality to lessons. While the new behaviour system is valued by most, inconsistencies in its application have been noted, leading to occasional mismanagement of behaviour. Leaders are actively working to address these issues and enhance the rewards system to recognize pupils who meet expectations.
Careers education is effectively integrated into the curriculum, ensuring that pupils from Year 7 receive guidance on their future educational paths. The sixth form offers dedicated one-on-one advice regarding university and apprenticeship options. The personal, social, and health education curriculum aims to foster responsible and respectful citizenship among pupils.
Despite the positive aspects, some pupils do not engage in extracurricular activities, indicating a need for increased participation. Leaders and governors have a clear understanding of the school’s strengths and areas for improvement, and they are committed to enhancing the school’s performance further. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges, but leaders remain focused on their long-term vision for the school. Overall, Skinners’ Academy demonstrates a commitment to providing a supportive and effective educational environment for its pupils.
