Heath Lane Academy, located in Earl Shilton, Leicester, was inspected from July 2 to July 3, 2019. The overall effectiveness of the school was rated as good, with leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, and personal development, behavior and welfare also rated as good. However, outcomes for pupils were found to require improvement. The sixth form study programs were rated as good, and this was the first inspection for the school since its establishment.
The principal, supported by senior leaders, has made significant strides in enhancing the quality of teaching. Teachers demonstrate strong subject knowledge and a clear understanding of effective classroom practices, leading to consistently good teaching. Senior leaders regularly monitor lessons to ensure the curriculum is delivered effectively. Despite these improvements, pupil outcomes still require attention, as not all students make consistently good progress. Historically, GCSE attainment has been low, but current students are performing better than previous cohorts. Pupils in Years 7 and 8 are making good progress due to the improvements in teaching.
The curriculum has been reviewed to provide students with regular opportunities to solidify their knowledge across various subjects, contributing to improved progress. Pupils exhibit good behavior in lessons and throughout the school, and they learn about diversity and respect for others. The sixth form offers well-targeted support, enabling students to achieve well and transition successfully to their next steps. Staff are vigilant regarding pupil welfare and work effectively to ensure safety.
Senior leaders have collaborated with professionals from other schools to enhance the curriculum and provide high-quality training for staff. The multi-academy trust board offers substantial support and challenge to senior leaders, demonstrating a clear understanding of the school's quality of provision. Attendance is on the rise, although disadvantaged pupils' attendance remains a concern. Average ability pupils in key stage 4 are not making sufficient progress, particularly in mathematics and science. Furthermore, senior leaders need to ensure that all parents are informed about the significant improvements in behavior and teaching quality.
To further improve, senior leaders must ensure that all pupils, including those of average ability, make consistently good progress across a wide range of subjects, particularly in mathematics and science. Additionally, efforts must be made to improve attendance among disadvantaged pupils and to keep all parents informed about the enhancements in the school's provision.
The leadership and management of the school are strong, with the principal having established high expectations for pupil behavior and teaching quality. Senior leaders have effectively implemented changes that have led to improved pupil behavior and teaching standards. Regular checks on teaching quality and pupil progress allow for timely interventions when necessary. The curriculum has been revised to ensure it meets the needs of all pupils, and high-quality training has equipped teachers with the skills needed to deliver effective lessons.
Pupils are engaged in their learning and demonstrate positive attitudes. They receive regular feedback, which they use to improve their work. The school promotes personal development and welfare effectively, teaching pupils about safety, healthy living, and the importance of respect. The behavior of pupils is generally good, with appropriate support provided for those who struggle. Overall, while the school has made significant progress, there are still areas that require attention to ensure all pupils achieve their full potential.
