The Axis Academy, a Co-educational school, caters to 61 students aged 4 to 18, with 67% boys and 33% girls. Academic performance is a mixed bag, with 0% scoring high in key stage 2, 20% meeting the medium cohort, and 80% falling into the low cohort. The school welcomes disadvantaged students, accommodating 1 in key stage 2. In terms of Special Educational Needs, 0% have statements or plans, and 0% follow English as an additional language. Unfortunately, reading and writing progress measures are at 0, with no students reaching the expected standard. The atmosphere at The Axis Academy seems lacking in terms of academic achievement.
On a positive note, the school offers a range of extra-curricular activities to enrich students’ experiences. However, the lack of academic progress is concerning. The Axis Academy needs to focus on improving academic outcomes to provide a more well-rounded education for its students.
In conclusion, The Axis Academy has potential but needs to address its academic performance to truly support the wellbeing of its students. Further improvements in teaching and learning strategies are necessary to enhance the overall educational experience at the school.

The Axis Academy, located in Crewe, has been inspected for the first time since its opening in September 2020. The inspection, conducted on March 21 and 22, 2023, resulted in an overall effectiveness rating of good across all evaluated areas, including the quality of education, behavior and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. The school caters to pupils aged 4 to 16, specifically those with social, emotional, and mental health needs, including some with autism spectrum disorder. All students have an Education, Health and Care plan.
The school environment is described as warm and nurturing, where pupils feel safe and valued. Staff members have high expectations, and pupils generally respond positively, demonstrating good behavior and effort in their studies. The school has established clear routines that help students manage their feelings and build trust with staff. Positive relationships between staff and pupils are emphasized, contributing to a supportive atmosphere that aids in re-engaging students who may have previously missed significant educational opportunities.
The curriculum at The Axis Academy is personalized to meet the individual needs of pupils, with a strong focus on enhancing social and emotional skills. Leaders have identified key knowledge for most subjects, allowing pupils to build on their prior learning effectively. However, in a few subjects, the curriculum is still being refined, which has led to some pupils not achieving their full potential. Staff utilize pupils' Education, Health and Care plans effectively to tailor support, and they collaborate with external professionals to ensure that students receive necessary assistance.
Reading is prioritized, with targeted support for those who struggle. Staff are well-trained in phonics, helping pupils develop confidence and fluency in reading. The learning environment is calm, and staff are equipped to manage challenging behaviors, which minimizes disruptions and allows for focused learning. While attendance has improved for some pupils, there are still challenges with regular attendance for a minority, impacting their learning experience.
The school places a strong emphasis on mental health, incorporating activities like horse riding and dog therapy to support pupils with anxiety. Life skills education, including cooking and budgeting, is provided, alongside lessons on democracy and respect for diversity. Pupils engage in charitable activities and receive quality careers guidance, with older students benefiting from work experience placements that inform their future choices.
Staff satisfaction is high, with many expressing that their concerns are heard and their workloads are considered. The board of trustees effectively supports and challenges school leaders. The safeguarding arrangements are robust, with a culture of vigilance and well-trained staff who know how to respond to concerns. Leaders work closely with external agencies to ensure pupil safety and well-being.
To improve, the school needs to finalize the curriculum in a few subjects to enhance learning outcomes for all pupils. Additionally, efforts to support families and improve attendance for those who are frequently absent should continue. Overall, The Axis Academy demonstrates a commitment to providing a supportive and effective educational environment for its pupils, fostering both academic and personal development.
