Georgina Blaskey went to try the latest beauty treatment to lift and rejuvenate skin – microneedling – and here’s what happened.
Last week I visited Jess Woolliscroft at Queens Beauty (based at Head South on Northcote Road) to try her newest offering: Dermapen, a revolutionary micro-needling treatment to tighten, lift and rejuvenate skin.
I was really nervous about this treatment because it involves needles and a red face – neither of which I was looking forward to – but I needn’t have worried. As always, Jess put me at ease while slathering my face in a numbing gel. After 20 minutes when it had kicked in, Jess showed me the Dermapen. On its end are 12 needles that oscillate at such speed, it glides across your skin. As it does so, the needles create tiny punctures in the skin’s surface, causing micro-trauma, and inducing an immune response (that’s where the redness comes in) and, subsequently, the creation of new healthy collagen. The punctures also act as micro-channels that carry topical nutrients used during the treatment deep into skin layers for an increased effect. Because the needles oscillate as quickly as they do, the tip of the Dermapen feels like it’s gliding across the skin, without catching or causing any dermal tearing. I could feel the pen moving across my face but I couldn’t feel the needles at all. During the treatment, Jess layered hyaluronic acid on my skin so it could penetrate more deeply than normal.
Once she had finished, Jess covered my skin in a tinted moisturiser. When I got up and glanced in the mirror I was stunned at how normal I looked. Even at school pick up, no one notice that I’d just been used as a pin cushion! Later that evening, my skin felt a bit warm and tight (as if I had sunburn on my face) so I used a hyaluronic nourishment mask mask (it’s a cloth mask saturated in copper peptides, zinc B5 and hylafuse complex to heal, strengthen, hydrate and calm the skin) for 30 minutes and when I woke up the next day, the redness was 80% gone (Jess stocks the masks). The last couple of days my skin has been thirstier than usual but I’m beginning to see the benefits.
I’m signing up for a course of three to get maximum results of reduced fine links and wrinkles, scarring (an area on my chin from hormone break outs that needs addressing) and pigmentation (sun spots, be gone!).
