It seems Sadiq Khan has proposed to increase the size of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) from the City/West End Congestion charge area to include the whole of London inside the North and South Circulars.
Also he intends to bring implementation forward to next year instead of 4 years time in 2020.
Living just outside in Wandsworth that means a trip to Putney of Fulham or Clapham or Battersea will cost me £12.50 each time.
If you live inside you have three years to sell your car (which will be virtually worthless as it's not ULEZ compliant) and then pay £12.50 a day (£4562 a year) whether you use your car or not!
Despite Mr Khans rhetoric of supporting the less well off - this will squarely hit the poorer drivers, the OAPs, the nurses, the care workers the part-time workers such as teaching assistants - those who drive older cars.
Let me make it clear - I am all in favour of cleaning London's air but is an OAP in their 2005 1000cc Nissan Micra really the biggest pollution problem and the first to target???
I would like to see the statistics that show how many come in to the CC zone and what their relative pollution is against, say, a 7,000 diesel lorry or a 4,500 litre diesel 4x4.
At least leave the legislation until 2020 - in 4 years time many will have been scrapped anyway - why not make it 7 years then 99.9% will have gone and you won't turn an OAPs car into scrap overnight and take away their independence.
