I am in the same situation. Summer child starting in September.
My oldest started at 2.5 years and did 3 mornings for the first two terms, which I thought worked well. They are still very young, and the nursery at this stage is mainly for socialising them, getting them used to group/school environment etc. The more 'hard core' learning comes closer to 3 years old so I feel 3 afternoons are more than enough to start with.
I guess it depends on your situation too, I already have a full time nanny and am doubling up by having my child in pre-school anyway.
I think it's easier to increase over time, than to start out with lots of days and find out that it doesn't work for some reason. My plan is to keep the three afternoons for the first two terms, then do 5 mornings (if I get mornings by then) and an afternoon and the following year start with 5 mornings and 3 afternoons, and the last two terms I will probably go full time.
