Hello

Thanks for your inquiry. Sorry not to reply sooner, but I didn't realise you had posted this thread until now.

You asked for information about delays to potty training. I took this information directly from a letter written by Hilary Vick at Real Nappies for London (RNfL) to Cllr Nicholas True, LB Richmond.

On the RNfL website it says:
Potty training
Since the dominance of disposable nappies children are potty training at three rather than two years old. :o

When your baby is changed from a wet cotton nappy to a dry one they feel the difference. It stimulates their curiosity about cause and effect and they start to experiment with holding and releasing their bladder - thus developing the necessary muscles. You will then see the signs that they are ready to potty train and help them. :D

Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means to go backwards.
Aldous Huxley

If you would like more information about this, please reply to the thread and we can add more information.

Thanks
Jemima

"One of the lesser known effects of convenience nappies is the fact that it delays toilet training by approximately one year."

have you got any information to support that please?

Nappuccinos (Real nappy demos) in Wandsworth

Nappy Ever After will be giving real (washable cloth) nappy presentations in Wandsworth starting February 2011 and continuing through the year.

What is a Nappuccino?

A Nappuccino is a free event where expectant or new mums can gather for a coffee and a presentation of the benefits of real (washable cloth) nappies. A Nappy Ever After Advisor, who has used real nappies themselves, will give a demonstration on how to use the best real nappies on the market. All of the nappies we stock have been tried, tested and approved by us (and our customers) as truly the best.

During the demo, questions can be asked and tailored kits can be purchased from the advisor. Discounts and freebies on kit purchases. There is no hard sell and no obligation to buy.

Council Cash Back schemes are explained and RNfL Vouchers are accepted.

If you are interested in coming to a Nappuccino, please go to http://www.nappyeverafter.co.uk/nappuccino to find your nearest real nappy Advisor and nappucicno dates/venues or if you are interested in hosting a Nappuccino contact Nappy Ever After for details: mail2007@nappyeverafter.co.uk

Why use real nappies?
One of the lesser known effects of convenience nappies is the fact that it delays toilet training by approximately one year. Not only does this create additional nappy waste it also creates stress for parent and child.

It is becoming more and more common for a child of three or older to be incapable of taking themselves to the toilet. And the reason is likely to be that s/he was changed infrequently and left for long periods in a ‘stay-dry’ nappy or ‘nappy pants’. This means s/he has not had the stimuli necessary to develop the muscles to control their bladder. There has also been a neglect of toilet training that has led to ignorance amongst parents.

Not only this, but nappy pants are very expensive. If children stay using them for an extra year this is an extra expense and an added problem for households on low incomes.

Nappy Ever After is run by people with a long experience of real nappies. We give residents the opportunity to find out about washable nappies and expose them to information about potty training. We also put interested residents in touch with local reusable nappy sellers. This can be a great business opportunity for residents with childcare responsibility.

Environmental and financial benefits
Britain throws away nearly three billion nappies a year, That’s nearly eight million a day. Disposable nappies are a very unpleasant component of domestic waste and 90% of them end up in landfill. We don’t know how long it takes the plastics in nappies to decompose, but it could take hundreds of years. As disposables have only been around for about thirty years, that means that every one is probably still there! :o

Real nappies can be up to 40% better for the environment than disposables. This was the finding from the 2008 update to the Environment Agency’s Life Cycle Analysis Report on nappies. Unlike disposables, Real Nappies put parents in control of the impact they have on the environment, with the carbon savings directly related to how you choose to wash your Real Nappies.

The Real Cost ;)
You can kit your baby out with all the nappies they need from around £99-£400, add £1 per week to wash them and you’ll still save £500 per child compared to the market leading disposable nappy. Use your nappies again on your next child/ren and the savings increase.

Washable wet wipes could save a further £250 per child. As well as saving more money you will benefit your baby’s skin. :D
