I have had 2 coils fitted. I found that it was similar to getting a smear, with light period pains after. A warm bath and a couple of ibuprofen did the trick for me.
Never found the experience horrendous, but the first time I had a coil fitted the doctor said I had tiny cervix which made the process last 45 minutes. However, like another post has mentioned if you have a competent doctor/nurse who knows what they are doing with coils, you will be fine.
